My New Find For My Kitchen!

So this past weekend, I found a new addition for my kitchen, which is.......A 1977 Sears Best Kenmore, Trash Compactor in Tawny Gold! I gave $10.00 for this thing. I have always wanted one, I have heard good things about how one can be a benefit. I read a great back post on here about the proper use for one, and what to do to get the most. I can't wait to get some bags and start! Here are some pictures of it. its in relatively good condition, usual wear, nothing seems to be broken or damaged. It will need basic cosmetic cleaning, you know, regular people don't keep up the appearances of their appliances like we do. =) I am pretty pleased to have found this. Oh yes, and it also still has its original can of freshener in it,I love the graphics on the can!..So I think I will keep it on display.

Had one of these for a few years in the 70's.  Did the job, but decided it was not worth the cost of the bags and such, don't remember when we got rid of it.

 

I do know I've seen that bags are still available.  Hope it works well for your needs...

Trash compaction was a great way to get more into your trash can and even save some space in landfills before recycling became widespread. A great find. Happy crushing!

I am not positive

BUT, the front panel may be reversible so you have the Harvest showing, there may be either a white or Avocado on the other side.  This varied by model, but if you wanted to change the color.  I thought this because of the chrome side molding.  Usually the non-color changing models had  wrap around color.

 

Some models had that feature, and some did not.  Our GE had four, Harvest, Avocado, White, and Coppertone.

We had a Kenmore for a number of  when we lived out in the country with no curbside pick up.  It worked really well, just do not put food waste in there if you can help it..  it sticks to the bottom of the ram and can get stinky eventually regardless of the can of spray. We didn't even bother with the spray can after a while because we didn't put food in there.   Ours was harvest gold as well iirc but I  spray painted it white and there were 2 or 3 color panels behind the harvest gold panel on the front.. check and see if they're still in behind yours.

Geez, these were never all that popular here, but my father the gadget fanatic insisted we get one!  Ours was the GE with the round bucket - a fond memory of my mis-spent youth was waiting to see the garbage truck roll by and watch the person perched on the back of the truck realize that the wee little bag at our curbside also contained gravity.  The look when they fell off the back of the truck... LOL

Home compactors neat-but----The trash trucks compactor can compact the trash to greater density-and they can take bulk items-including dead home compactors!

They got popular in places where local bylaws restricted the number of bags you could set out to the curb and recycling wasn't what it is today in many places.

I am looking forward to using it, I had already figured from reading that past post, it was most effective for dry trash. So it will be used in a harmonious manner in addition to my regular trash can, and my garbage disposal. =)

Are still available - we have one and love her! I would suggest you not use the plastic bags, but the brown paper bags with plastic liners. Walmart carries them. We painted ours a colour which works better with our kitchen than almond.

I vaguely recall seeing a trash compactor for sale when I was young. Maybe it was on one of our rare trips through Sears. I remember my mother taking one look, and making some comment about the savings in having reduced trash service was cancelled out by the cost of the compactor. And that was before factoring in anything like special bags. (Our trash bags were always grocery store bags which were about the right size to fit the kitchen trash container.)

Charges MORE if you want a SMALLER trash container. They charge much, much, Yugely much more if you want two regular ones - more than twice as much.

For that reason, we may have more compactors in our area than the rest of the US, together.

I use the Pinnacle and Baker trash compactors at the dump out my way-again greater compaction than home models-the commercial ones have hydraulic compaction-greater packing force-more density-like as on a trash truck.A large paper shredder takes care of most of my paper waste.So-a home type compactor is not really for me-have seen them at yard sales.Who knows may get one to play with next one I find.Incinerators-haven't seen these since I was a very young child-every house had one in the backyard.Again these were replaced by more powerful and improved garbage truck compactors.Also many areas started forbidding incinerators when the level of plastics in trash went up.
