My new Hotpoint additions

Well I have to say that I picked up what is probably my best machine to date a couple of weeks ago. A Hotpoint 15972 top loader in Almond. It's in great condition cosmetically with the only damage being to the paintwork on the lid which I think was quite common and it had a table top In great condition for a change. Here are some pics

It had been the machine of someone's grandad and even came with the original instruction book although it is more of a poster. Here is a close up of the guide on the inside lid

As usual there were one or two issues with it. The first was when I tried it out water started coming from the base. However on close inspection the hose from the cold valve to the fill point had split so I cut it short to get it going and have now got replacements. It ran fine brought the test wash and I wasn't taking chances with the drain hose which I tied to the sink - to many times mopping up has taught me that one! The water really does drain at a rate of knots!

Internally is pretty good too. I did have a mishap with the back panel though which I'm really annoyed about as it was also in great condition. Unfortunately, I hadn't noticed that several screws were missing and when we moved it downstairs, it caught on a step and bent in two it's not too noticeable though so I might have got away with it. You can see that the foam is missing from the overflow so that is on order. Probably disintegrated

The other issues were rust from the bowl support clamp bolts so I have a new kit coming too and the full and medium load switches were not working as they should. Closer inspection of this revealed a repair had taken place at some point on the full load switch and it had been wired back to front so soon sorted

Really chuffed with it. It's so much quieter and smoother than the newer 9605s that I have/had. I like the way that after the two spins, the machine coasts for 40 seconds afterwards before the brake clicks in although not too sure about the static rinse although the longer spin and the suds flush doe seem to do the job. I think this will become the daily driver when I move to the new place as it has a crappy Beko there at the moment

Finally, Seeing as my ex has custody of the John Lewis heat pump dryer, I decided it was time to treat myself to something more fitting. Shame it's not in almond to match but there you go. Works a treat and has its original hose too.

Was this the 15972 that was on Ebay a while ago, located in Coventry? Very pleased to see it's been saved! What a beauty!

Do you think the extra metal in construction (e.g. the console) helps cut down vibration therby making it seem at little quieter? Is the cabinet metal a smidge sturdier?

I'm inclined to think the programming was easier on the mechanics of these machines compared to the later 96-series - e.g. those 40 second pauses mean the machine isn't spinning at full speed when the brake is applied, and the motor isn't being thrown into reverse direction almost immediately from wash to drain.

Well done on your new machines, i'm sure you will get that toploader sorted out soon. Thank you for the excellent pictures. I want that toploader lol !!!

Hi Al. Yes it is that machine. I almost didn't get it as I forgot to bid and the auction ended but got in contact and sorted it out. So glad I did even though it was a bit of a trek to get it and some of the residual water leaked into the car so it's now a bit smelly! Where's the febreeze lol

I think the machine is probably better made all round as its quiet on all parts of the cycle although it can still walk on spin with an unbalanced load. The metal console is so much better than the flimsy plastic of the 96 series which is usually cracked in the corners. I can't see much difference with the mechanics that would make it quieter so perhaps the motor is just better - not sure. I do think you are right though on the cycle. I never thought it was a good idea going from 1050 rpm to zero in 5 seconds.
