My new laundry room in This Old House.........

Kinda boring. the kenmores were filthy and the floor is way out of level so the first thing I did was clean up and level the machines. The laundry should have never been put up here in the 2nd floor of the old part of the house. I fear its way under supported and they add a laundry , a 40gal hot water heater and a bathroom! Thats a lot of weight abd the floor is showing it. trying to talk the missus into doing away with it as soon as I can get my Maytags in the downstairs laundry.

The Kenmores do a fair job, the washer leaks a little. I`m guessing early 80s. They were really dirty!

Actually, those machines are from the '90's. It's the exact pair that I have in my house, which I purchased new when I bought my house in January of 1993. They're great machines!!

I was amazed to come here and read complaints about a washer washing too much. I didn't think that was posible.

Having spent too much time flipping from Hot to Warm during the fill, to end up with a warm wash, I think the accutemp control makes a washer twice as worthwhile. I enjoyed the feature very much on the Maytag Atlantis I owned.

The Kenmore does wash well and as much as it makes by butt suck lemons to admit it. No dryer in the history of mankind drie my permanent press with less wrinkles and shrinking than a Kenmore and its many step brothers.

Now, can we talk, since I own a Kenmore. Its about that G@D D&MN clack clack clack of the Kenmore dual action agitator that makes me want to throw it off the deck on wash day.

Hi! Kelly, there might be a replacement Kit that you can get, that would be the newer Auger Gears. I had a real early 1980's Lady-K Washer that had the first Dual-Action Agitator in it and it had the noisy Auger Gears. Later on I found out, after getting rid of that Washer, they changed the Auger Gears, to be quieter. I still have the newer 1982 Lady-K Electronic Touch Control Washer and Matching Dryer, in one of my most favorite Colors: Coffee, originally naturally called Copper-Tone.

Good Luck with hopefully locating some quieter Auger Gears. "BTW" obviously you might first-hand go through Sears Parts, even "via" the Internet Address and enter your Model Number to look up the Part{s} Number for a replacement and see if it "Sub's" to a newer Number and hopefully being the newer Auger Gear Set.

Holy Gothum City, Bat Man!!!

I had no idea. I replaced the dogs, when I first moved in because the top part didn't rachet.

Then the noise began.

I'll look for the Full Meal Deal at Sears and see what I find.

The condo has a closet for the washer and dryer so what ever I have needs to stack. Of the TL options, I think I have the best there is to offer.

You heard it here, first. Kelly said he thought a Kenmore was the best choice.

Hi! Kelly, if you haven't made your decision as of yet, personally I would go with a Maytag Top-Load Stackable Washer/Dryer Set. They still have the Porcelain Wash Tub and the Orbital Transmission for the Washer.

If I ever look into a Stackable Washer/Dryer again, I've been thinking about these, but I'm also going to look at the 2nd Hand Shops, to see if I can locate one of the more Original Models, with the Electronic Touch Controls and the Slide-Back Washer Lid, instead of it raising up to open the newer Lids. The older original Units have the Helical-Drive Transmission, before the Orbital Transmission, but I would settle actually for either Model Unit, older or newer and even totally new.

I don't know if the Stationary Dry Rack would be necessary to you, but I believe that they do have it available for these Stackable Top-Load Washer/Dryer Units, but it might be an Optional Accessary. They Cost new around $19.95, at least through Maytag Internet Ordering.

I am looking for the Maytag with the sliding lid.

I have been cruising Craigs, which is where I ran into the Flair and the old KA dishwashers.

I am really intuned with Helical drive. With few a exceptions in moving, I washed in Maytag for over 30 years.

I learned something about Dual Action (agitators) I never knew.

For their age, these look like they are in very nice shape. Sounds like you might need a new pump on the washer to cure the slight leak, pull the cabinet off and check for water "trails" to find the source. I know a foster-mother of 9 who has this same washer, bought it new in 92 I think and has been using it with only a coupler and agitator-dog kit replaced. Still washing 5 huge loads a day...

I agree about the quality of the older Maytags...don't know enough about the last series (not even evil Whirlpool could pull all of them that fast and replace them with their junk) but if I may make a suggestion...
The frontload washer with the dryer on top combination is very common here in Europe. Since the dryers often have to be condensing - no place to vent - they and the washer often end up in a cabinet or tight corner someplace. You have a bigger washer, a bigger dryer - and much better reliability than anything modern made in the 'States right now.
But if you can find some clasic units, go for them!
(I ran a Miele cold-water condensing dryer over a Bauknecht for 6 years and was very happy with them. The weight of the dryer was no problem, the washer frame was built to take it and the extra mass sure dampend any tendency to "walk" the machine might have had on my ancient floors.
Just a thought...

You really did an awesome job cleaning that Kenmore set up...they look brand new! I bet even under all that dirt, they probably did not see much use.

As for the leak, I'm with Greg, it's most likely the pump. From what I've heard, 99.9% of all leaks in DD machines are caused by the pump, but it's extremely easy to replace; even easier than the coupler, IMHO. After you remove the cabinet, undo the hoses and the two mounting clips, and it pops right off!

Thanks Austin abd Greg! Ill look into it. It really dose wash a big load and the dryer works really well too. The downstairs laundry will bw my next project. Needs new floor and linolium and a new paint job then I can move my stuff in.
