Hey fellas!

I wanted to share my new '61 Zenith tv. It's a lower model. They didn't advertise it at all, but it sure is pretty. Amazing the quality that Zenith put into a BOL or near BOL set. I love it!

zenith reliability

i have a smaller, steel cabinet '61 zenith of the type you
used to see placed on those TV stands with the glitter-filled
clear plastic wheels-other than a little corona trouble in
the HV cage,appears to have never needed any repairs and works
good,i try to run it every few mo. to keep the caps good.

I'm in the process of repairing my '55 Zenith Flash-Matic.

It's in very nice shape. And it has a very big cabinet.

I like the TV lamp. I put the Siamese Cats lamp on top of mine.

I am very impressed with Zenith reliability. I also have a '51 model in equally nice condition, I hope to get it up and working soon. I'm just having trouble finding the part I need. I would love to have an early space command, flash-matic or lazy bone... maybe one day.

The tv lamp was my great aunt's. She gave it to me close to 15 years ago, when she noticed I was admiring it (she was using it to hold a door open!).

As far as the controls go, power/volume/VHF are shown. Most the other adjustments are behind the metal panel at the bottom, with a couple in the back.

what part do you need for that '51 zenith?

Zenith Part no. 87-1

It's listed on the photofact as "The Integrator Network" under the miscellaneous section. Though it isn't listed as one, I'm told it's a capacitor, however I can't find the value for it, so I don't know what to replace it with. I'm new at this, but I think the sets problems go to this one faulty cap (I've replaced almost every other one in the set). It has a strong picture tube and seems to want to work. I can get sound, I just can't get the picture to work properly.

check resistors too

Also check the carbon resistors in that set,especially high
ohm ones-they tend to creep up in ohms after several decades
i have checked some in vintage electronics that needed repair
and found they did indeed creep up in ohms,over 20 percent
in some cases.someday i am going to take a carbon resistor
that has crept up and apply voltage untill it heats,let it
gently cook for a day or 2 to see if they recover with use
or not.As far as the mystery cap in that '51 zenith,if its
bad you might dissasemble to see if there is any resistors
or inductors built into it.

A resistor that has changed in value can't be fixed-you have to replace it.Cooking it will just hasten its failure.I beleive the Intergrator devices were a group of resistors and capacitors in a circuit to perform a given function-were common in older electronics-the forunner to the IC!Since semiconductors weren't used then-the device had resistors in it or capacitors-you have to replace it with a same or similar part#.If you can get a Sams Photofact on the machine-the scematic can tell you whats inside the part so you can make it up if required from descrite parts.

No value is listed. It looks like a mica cap, but...? It's so frustrating. Next time I get into the '51, I'll check those resistors. Thanks for the advice.

Jumping back to the '61,.. Anyone have a suggestion on how to clean yellowed clear plastic? The VHF dial is pretty yellowed.
