Hmm, I think all the most likely problems have already been covered by the experts here...and your own work.
One very silly question tho', and I apologize in advance...could the drain hose not be high enough to prevent siphoning? I know, I know...but there is always water in that hose and it doesn't take much to get them going...and once they start, well -

Not a silly question at all!!! Yes, the hose is higher than the machine itself being hooked up to a faucet. I think the issue here is the old pump sat for a long time without being used so the flapper probably warped and would no longer seal. I have a feeling that may be the case with the new one as well although not nearly as bad. I may have to try another new pump. It probably sat on the shelf for a long time and also lost its seal.

Gosh I almost sound like I know what I'm doing don't I?!?! hehe
