My Weekend Adventure (Oct 1-2)

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

But wait... there is more to the story.....

Saturday evening I checked my e-mail and got one from my friend Rich sending me a CraigsList link for a Westinghouse Spacemate washer in Fontana, Ca.   It was on my way home, so I called the seller as I was leaving Tucson and made arrangements to stop by to take a look.

Here's what I found.   This pail yellow Westinghouse Spacemate washer that had been taken out of a 1957, 60 foot, split lever, Pacemaker mobile home.   I was tempted to bring it home, after all I had room in the truck, I do really like front loaders and made sure I kept enough cash to buy it, just in case.

But..............

But............

The door/tub boot was way beyond toast.    Since I would eventually want to make it functional again (and not knowing where I would EVER find a door boot) I decided to pass.

But wait there's more............

But wait there's more............

As I was talking to the guy about the washer, the mobile home, etc... and young male black Lab and a pit bull pup wondered over.  They were both very friendly and playful.   At one point the guy was trying to "shoo" them off.   I asked "Those are not yours?"  "No.... they're strays and they just come around and eat my dogs food,  you can take them home!"   And that's what I did, well one of them anyway..... the black Lab.

I'd not been able to come up with a name for him the last 24 hours, since bringing home.... that is until about an hour ago............

I'm going to call him Westy.    Rather appropriate, don't you think?

Amazing story Kevin. You've done a great thing by giving that dog a good home and I'm sure he will be well loved. Westy is a great name. Too bad you didn't get those machines to go with him but I know how it goes. You can't save them all.

Congrats on the wonderful light yellow Maytag's, too. They are stunning and in a not so easy to find color. Hope to see your collection in person one day.

Tails of a black lab and yellow Tags

Now, more than ever, I know that I made the right decision to pass that email & link on to you! Those Maytags are to die for and Westy is to live for. All of them are so shiney and healthy looking! My yellow Tags will come and in the meantime, once my leg is healed and my life back in order, Jacqui and I will just have to come down and visit all three. Question is, who will I try to smuggle back home; the Tags or Westy?

RCD

Oh Kevin...

How wonderful you saved Westy let alone the Tags (which by the way are pristine).I bet he'll be Loyal to the end (just like any Maytag) !!! We are Long overdue for a catch up phone call, and we close the Restaurant for the season in just 306 hours ummmmmm I mean 13 days. (Who's counting ?)
Good Luck with the New "Guys" in your life and we'll catch up soon. Eddie

Those 'Tags are beautiful, Kevin - congrats on a great find. Do you know anything of their history? They look like they were a "vacation" set, so clean!

Westy will make a wonderful dog, Labs are some of the most loyal and fun dogs. Hope you like playing "fetch" - for hours and hours! We'll have to get Westy and Newton together to play. Newton was named after Newton, Iowa as we go him right around the time the Maytag factories were all closing down.

The Q4689 door boot for the Westy was in stock at Modern Parts the last I knew, seems like that one wasn't as hard to find as the slant-front boot. Our UK friends have also been a terrific source of those older boots as well. You can still go back! :-)

Kevin - what a weekend for you. Not only did you bring home a beautiful set, but Westy is such a ham! Congrats on the new pup, and the Maytags. They are stunning.

Also you got a chance to visit with old friends. Gotta love a Blackstone!

Ben

Congratulations!

Karma will out. You were meant to have a beautiful set of vintage Maytags. And these are in better condition than the ones that guy in Massachusetts had. They're Grannies' set to boot!

Kevin, it looks like you had a great weekend!  I'm glad you were able to hook up with the Tucson group.

That Maytag pair is beautiful, and so is Westy.  I'll bet he's going to be the best dog you've ever had.

Wow, what a great travel.  New Tags and a cute Lab, named Westy.  I know you will enjoy all 3.  alr2903

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for your comments!

I still can't get over how close to absolutely pristine the machines are!

Yes so far Westy is settling in fairly well!

Here is another shot of the Maytag set.....

Yay!

Wow...what a great set, Kevin! Too bad you didn't get the Westy, but glad you got Westy. He is so cute!! Can't wait to come over and see him. Greg is right....I've heard those Spacemates boots can still be found. It's not to late to go get the yellow Westy ...it's so cute...make the guy a low ball offer.

How cool, Kevin! I'd been wondering about you--and now here you all full of adventure. Those 'tags are TO DIE FOR, but Westy, well he's even better. I love a lab. They are the sweetest, most loyal dogs in my humble opinion. I'm sure you'll be happy together.

1963 Kenmore set

It's funny. Gordon and I were talking about this set about two weeks ago, trying to remember who had it. They really do have a commanding presence in that laundry room. Design and quality were ever so prevalent during 1963, especially for Kenmores.

Have a good one,
James

Hi Kevin,

The machines look great and I am so glad that you are giving Westy a home.
Sure hope you will come and visit us again in Tucson.

Ross

Thanks again you guys!

And to think I initially shrugged off these Maytags when I first got the e-mail about them!   Of course now I'm very pleased I took the time to make that phone call and of course the trip to Tucson.   Being able to meet up with Justin in Phoenix AND meet Ross, Nate, Roger and the Davids' in Tucson was the "icing on the cake" for the weekend!

Of course the added bonus is bringing Westy home!   Now I just have to get him to... learn his name... stop jumping on  me... heal when walking... not yank me down the street... stop scratching up my the side of my truck... learn to obay when I call him....etc .......etc .......etc .................  LOL

;-)

Kevin

P.S... Where does "Sunny Yellow" fall on the rare-ness chart?   Since I see more PINK then Yellow, I'm thinking this is more "rare" then pink.

Your thoughts??

Thanks!

RARENESS OF YELLOW MTS

Kevin I do think that the yellow is the most rare color in this time period. I had also seen this pair on Craigs list and briefly thought about getting them shipped east. But since  I just did the copper brown A900 washer and the matching DE750 like yours I decieded that that was enough MTs. I got bored with the A900s performance very quickly, it can live out its time in the museum for others to play with. But in any case I do love the color, I wish some of my other machines from this period were yellow.

New Finds

Hi Kevin, congrtulations on another truckful, and great to see familiar faces enjoying themselves with all the laundry..the Maytags do look FAB in the Huey Pastel Colours...How many other Tag sets do you have??

Its a good job I wasnt with you, couldnt have resisted that spacemate, although you would have needed a few of you to haul it up top onto the truck..

Hope Westy enjoys his new home, cheers, Mike

You are an angel for adopting Westy. Black & chocolate labs are my favorite breed of dog. They are so sweet natured and loyal. All of the cats and dogs I've had have been strays or needed a home because their previous owners were moving away.

The pale yellow Maytags are to die for. I think that and the sunny yellow are my favorite appliance colors.
