Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It looks like around 2006

Your Duet washer is almost exactly the same model as mine. The entry model didn't come with a water heater. This not a bad machine, but care must be taken in loading, and the amount of HE detergent used. Mine has proven to be very finicky. Plus, overloading could tear the boot, or damage the suspension over time. Very fragile.

Thank you for the info and one thing that i have notice with my duet is sometime when i use tide he the washer says suds when the cycle is over even if there is not much detergent and i also have a feeling that in 2 years from now i will have to replace the washer i would go back to a good old fashion top load with agitator.

If this is your only front loader and you have two hookups:

First, I would follow the instructions for running your Duet through its cleaning cycle, with bleach. This will help keep any organisms from accumulating too much on the internal components. Wipe the boot dry, and any place that's accessible. Also, disassemble the detergent tray, then thoroughly clean those components. Keep the door open at all times. Now, set the Duet on the least used hookup and ONLY use it for bulky items that it can handle. Winter parkas, small comforters, pillows, that sort of stuff. The Duet is not going to reduce your water bill or save enough energy to matter anyway. In fact, mine uses MORE electricity and the same amount of water as my Frigidaire 1-18!

Meanwhile, save up for a Speed Queen top loader. When you get it, set it up as your DAILY DRIVER, and keep it within easy reach. You'll save a lot of strain on the Duet, and you'll be able to use it for what it does best: Thick, and puffy items that aren't too big. This will extend the life of your Duet significantly. Yes, you can make these machines last a while, but you really have to be vigilant and willing to spend a lot of time in their care and feeding.

save up for a Speed Queen top loader OR

a speed queen FRONTLOADER!!!! I think we proved on this site that as a modern brand Speed Queen is the way to go... and even if you consider a top or frontload machine... just go Speed Queen (or Miele but they don't have toploaders so it's a bit odd to mention them,... allthough I did xD)

I had a similar pair of Duets and thought the washer was a great machine and did an excellent job on whatever type of load, not just bulky items. In fact, I found the "Bulky Items" cycle to be fairly useless and I avoided it. I would trade my inept Affinity pair for those Duets if only the Duets would fit in my current laundry room. I suspect a pair of Duets would outlast an Affinity pair by a significant margin. It may be a while before those Duets need replacing, and even then it would only be the washer.

Their longevity is going to depend a lot on parts availability, though. Whirlpool changes the designs of their front loaders like car manufacturers do with their vehicles. There is little parts compatibility among the generations, unlike the standard DD top loader. Whirlpool also has a reputation for discontinuing their parts. I am slightly leaning towards the impression that these machines are really designed to be replaced every few years.

i don't know why but i have an intuition that i may soon have to replace them and if that is the case i would go with a top load maytag washer with agitator with matching dryer and if ever i do have to replace them with a top load here is a list of brands that i am tking of buying in the topload category depending where i would buy them

1 Maytag

2 Kenmore (if i buy the set at sears*)

3 fridgedair topload model with agitator with warm rinse option and extra rinse

4-Ge (?){maybe}

5-whirlpool/Inglis

among the five brands listed witch do you think that i should buy in my personel choice my first choice is maytag and my second choice the kenmore

My model was built oct 2004 in Germany. It looks identical to that pic. It's a GHW9300 with the heater. I've used it A LOT! It's my only washer. The control board went out after a year; since it was replaced, it's worked flawlessly. It will be 5 years old this April. I keep it plugged into a surge protector. My house is a single story on a concrete slab so when it spins it's almost always very smooth. Occasionally it will have vibration but not too bad. Never had any smells at all. Wish I had a bulky cycle to use more water, but my model is the one below that "at the time" and mine lacks it. My sister works for Whirlpool so I got a discount when I purchased it in apr 2005 and I think I paid 770 for it. There has been one repair for $99 dollars which was a misdiagnosed door latch assembly (still have the new door latch in my attic in the box it came in) Looking back I shouldn't have had to pay that but oh well. A few months later, it was found that it was the control board which was replaced since it was still under manufacturers warranty; been fine since.

Speed Queen is branded "Huebsch" in Canada

Alliance, makers of Speed Queen manufacture the same exact machines under the "Huebsch" brand in Canada. Check out their website, "home" washers and dryers are exactly like Speed Queen. FYI

Your welcome!

Pierre,
You'll find that alot of us are very opinionated on this site, but there are alot of very intelligent people on this site whose knowledge and opinion helped me to choose my SQ washer and dryer, to them I am grateful. Good luck to you.
