I bought a KitchenAid gas cooktop, based on the classic Chambers design, and this came with it, in addition to the regular burner grates. Any idea what it is?

It is used for large pots and made for those who use wocks.If you use a large preasure cooker or have a wock,that is a great device to have!These were made to keep wocks from turning over while you are cooking and turning the food over fast to evenly distribute heat.It also gave the gas/fuel more ventalation using a stockpot or huge preasure cooker making the flame more even and strong as needed to save time and cook with better results.

For electric stoves, there is also an electric "burner" accessory element that is raised up (replaces a standard plug-in coil-type element). It serves a similar puropose. It's for large stock pots and canners, etc. that would hang over a standard 8" element. (That, I know for a fact, is roughly 20cm). Prevents heat damage to cootop surface.
