Fastnacht

Louis, I'm disappointed in you! I thought for sure you'd know what those charming gentlemen are really up to.

But you are forgiven. I cheated. This photo came out of a calendar distributed by a German vendor that supplies our company with complex equipment.

The caption is: "Fastnacht in Villingen".

A little Googling brought up a number of German-language links. I tried using the automatic Google translation feature, and the result was quite hilarious. In fact, I liked it much better than the English-language one I found by scrolling down quite a bit.

In a nutshell, these folks are celebrating the end of the pre-Lent period. I gather that they are supposed to dress as fools, for some reason. The "hat" that one is wearing, and the other one is holding aloft, is really a carved wooden mask. You can see one such mask off in the distance.

Villingen is a little city in the middle of the Black Forest with apparently captivating old historic architecture. This event has been going on since pagan times, no sense in stopping it now.

The German-English translations claims that the fools eventually manage to "get their fat off" but perhaps something was lost in translation.

Ah, the Black Forest. Well, I guess that must be half way Transylvania from here. LOL Aren't those guys called Jesters in English?

Wedding Party?

Frigilux,

You kill me with some of your replies...........I'm still sitting here laughing!

And the one about the convenience store on New Year's Eve----very good.

OK, you asked for it...

Well, actually, you didn't, but I wanted to share the english translation of the Villingen Fastnacht web page anyway...

Here goes:

Since generations the Villinger fastnacht is maintained in accordance with old tradition. A first voucher is in documents from the year 1467, the Fasnet in advice minutes is later mentioned.

Villingen for the art of the mask carving tying to baroque models is famous - the existence of valuable masks, in Villingen "Schemen" mentioned, is unsurpassed in the Swabian alemannischen Fasnet.

Expiration

As in other centers of the Swabian alemannischen fastnacht the naerrische time begins on 6 January also in Villingen . The Schemen is hung up in the good room, the Narrobrunnen is decorated.

Already weeks before the fastnacht "are vibrated" by the children and young person the Narrorollen (Gschell) on the roads. In addition house balls and cap evenings take place.

On the Schmotzige Dunnschtig pull the children and young people disguised by the city. In the child removal the grades compete for the most creative costumes. Vorneweg run the small Narros as "Narrosome". This day belongs to the youth.

In the afternoon of the Fasnetsunntig the "Kater Miau" is released with the help of the cat music and the association of the guessing birds from the Romaeusturm. The representatives of the Narrozunft make themselves at 18 o'clock on before the city hall, in order to fetch the key there and with it the office force. Subsequently, the Glonkis looks for the Fasnet and finds it at the Bickentor. The karnevaleske influence is remarkable.

Early with daybreak of the Fasnetmentig the cat music pulls by the city and tells loudly of the beginning of the Fasnet. At nine o'clock begins then the historical removal of the Narros, Stachis, Altvillingerinnen, Murbile, Butzesel and Wuescht. The task of the Narro is the Straehlen, a formform form, with which the fellow men in humorous kind are reminded of their "misdemeanours". Until ashtray Wednesday so many get their fat off.

With the large removal at the Fasnetzieschtig a imposantes picture is then offered to the traveled crowds, if the historical Villinger figures pulls again by the city. Follow them other associations, bands and Karnevalsgruppen.

Around midnight, if the guild of heavy heart returns the city key, the Wuescht pulls all straw from their trousers and jackets. Thus a large fire is kindled, and all stand sad heart drum around.

Figures
Narro : The Narro, the most important figure of the Villinger Fasnet, carries risen angel face with deep and superior smile for the baroque church art to the schau. Its white Haes is painted with figures, animals and flowers, whose meaning is still disputed. Four belts with forty Pound heavy roles carry the Narro over its shoulders, also the Narrokragen (baroque halskrause), a fox tail and a wood sword may not not be missing.

Altvillingerin : As one of the first woman figures the Altvillingerin penetrated into the supremacy of the men in the fastnacht. Originally their clothes originate from the time, when Villingen belonged still to habsburgischen Austria. At this figure its golden wheel hood is remarkable. Although there is a very beautiful wood larva also for it, in order anonymity to protect, most Altvillingerinnen goes unverlarvt to the public.

Stachi : It carries the same trousers as the Narro, the collar and a fox tail. Instead of the heavy Narrorollen it wears only a blue wagoner shirt. In the hands it holds stretching shears, a staubwedel, a brush or similar naerrische implements. Before the face it carries a Suribel , to karikieren i.e. a Portraetscheme, which probably originally served for it, Villinger citizen. Today the Maskenschnitzer sketches always new indefinite faces to it. This Scheme is carried also in place of the Narroscheme to the Weissnarrenhaes with roles.

Murbile : She is a runzelige, verschmitzte old person and carries a tracht with frill hood, neck loop and scarf. Like also the Altvillingerin she distributes "Schnupfede" (sweets), in order to compensate the victims of the "Straehlens".

Butzesel : With wild jumps the Butzesel on a branch rides by the city. It is driven by "Trieber" (Stachis with scourges) with loud whip bangs by the city. If the Butzesel succeeds into a hotel to entwischen, the "Trieber" must pay the bill. This old-delivered figure carries a Blaetzlehaes with extra large donkey head.

Wuescht : With straw stuffed the threadbare Narrohaes of the Wuescht is thick. The children can throw it with schneebaellen and tannenzapfen. And the Wuescht offers willingly a target to them: On the back it carries a board with a "Lumpendogge" (material doll) or the like. The Lumpenliedle sung by the Wuescht is not straight for zartbesaitete ears, can even as "wuescht" be designated.

The Wuescht

From the translation, it appears that the straw-suited celebrants are the "Wuescht". Their role is to carry boards on their backs, with little dolls nailed to them. Children are invited throw snowballs and "tannenzapfen" (tree branches?) at the dolls. The Wuescht also sing little songs that are not meant for polite company ("not straight for zartbesaitete ears). I guess the straw helps to deflect any near-misses. At midnight, if the representatives of the "Narrozunft" return the key to the city, the Wuescht pull the straw from their pants, a fire is lit, and people mourn to the beat of a drum. Not sure what transpires if the key is not returned, but perhaps anything would be better.
