Need a new power cord for Sunbeam Toaster 1B14

I have my grandmother's Sunbeam Toaster 1b14 (circa 1956). The unit has a worn-out power cord that should be replaced, with a ground wire if possible.

 

Does anybody make a look-alike woven cord to replace it with? I know the antique fan crowd has something similar, but the two wires are left separate and simply helix around each other.

 

Also, can anybody recommend a video for disassembling, cleaning, and servicing the unit while it is open? There's one on YouTube that will work well enough, but due to bad camera work, much of the time video shows the technician's shoulder and nothing else.

I can't recall where, but I know I've seen a source for woven cords.  Whether a three conductor woven cord is an option, I don't know.

 

I took apart one of these toasters before, but it's been many years.  The thing you need to be most careful with is the first item you'll have to remove:  the light/dark control knob.  The one I removed had a frozen screw that broke.  I was able to super glue it, and it held for a number of years before the toaster was passed along.

 

Everything else is fairly straightforward.  IIRC, the one thing you have to be patient with is positioning of all of the dangling rods when you put the exterior cover back on.

Ive taken apart a few toasters, one exactly like that too. You will be surprised the layer of caked bread crumbs that will be in there. I can't exactly remember how to get it apart unless you show photos of the bottom and the sides. As for the cord, you do not never ever want to put a fan cord on there. The wire is not heavy enough. Go to some thrift stores and look for an old iron with a cloth cord and use that.
If you post some pictures, I will coach you through taking it apart, but if I remember right, the bakelite on the sides is extremely fragile.

I just seen these at Walmart.....and thought they would make a good replacement for an appliance mixer or such for a vintage look...

they come in a variety of colors as well....

just cut the outlet end off to the length you need and wire in....

I've cut the ends off of small appliance plug-in cords like in the link below, I would think you'd need at least 16 gauge wire cord for a toaster.

Paul: Egads! I did wright "Sunbeam"! I can only assume my wires crossed because I am also working on my Aunt's Sunbeam Model 11 mixer, which is missing a part or two and I am working on a posting for it.

 

Jon: Thanks for the coaching offer, if I get into trouble I'll post. Also thanks for the warning about the undersized fan wires. I was not considering them, but it's a public post and people can pick up all kinds of ideas.
