(Need Advice) Looking for a Dishwasher in Portland, OR

Hello all! First post for me. This site is amazing

So I'm 24, newly married and without a dishwasher. Just moved to the Portland area and am dismayed by the lack of older dishwashers. Basically, I'm looking for a dishwasher that works well... that I won't have to worry about konking out on me or not getting stuff clean. And mechanic controls are a plus too!

I've found two so far that I'm interested in, but I wanted to run them by you guys first to see what you thought. One of them looks like a 80s/90s model, the other, maybe 70s?

If the whirlpool isn't a power-clean

Then go with the Hotpoint. Both of these have some limitations about the upper rack (especially glasses in the corners) because of the use of a power tower as opposed to a second wash-arm. But the hotpoint's pump will probably throw more water. Also, those old GEs and Hotpoints do a lot of water changes, which compensates for the lack of filtration.

I guess I could have taken the time to actually look at the craigslist posts. The whirlpool is not a power clean. Definitely go with the Hotpoint if your choice is only these two machines.

I had that same Hotpoint model for about 15 years, it was already old when I bought it, and it still worked when I removed it for a remodeling of my kitchen. At times it left tiny bits on the upturned bottoms of coffee mugs in the top rack, but it also washed EVERYTHING WONDERFULLY, and you can really jam up those racks FULL FULL FULL.  Since it doesn't have buttons and lots of options, just make sure your water tank is at 140, and put detergent in both cups, you'll be pleased.

 

Also,. as some have said, a late model Kitchen Aid with the upper rack wash arm is also a great machine.

Sorry for the double post, but egads! Dishwashers are disappearing from Craigslist real fast! I'm trying to lock one down for our trip to Portland... and yeah, I'm a perfectionist/cheapskate.

So the *70s/80s Whirlpool* is gone. I might try for the hotpoint but it's out of my way. What about this guy:

That KitchenAid looks like it has major discoloration at the bottom of the tub. Plus with a door spring missing, I'd pass. Otherwise it would be a good dishwasher.

I don't see the level of discoloration that Bob did.

 

It looks like a door spring sitting on top of the machine.  If it's the only remaining one, I wonder why they removed them at all.

 

That machine appears to be an "Architect" model from 23 series, which means it has the upgraded power module system.  These are very capable machines.  Usually the "Architect" types show up in white, so black is kind of rare, and IMO has withstood the test of time better with regard to interior design.

 

If it looks like it would clean up well, a spring would be fairly easy to find.  I may even have one kicking around here from a 20 series I harvested a few things off of.
