Need help w/ E2L Centerplate

Ok,
I goofed up.
I have forgotten where the spring washer goes on the centerplate shaft. I thought it went between the clutch pinion collar and centerplate??

The problem I'm having is the agitator shaft is engaged all the time regardless of the shift lever position.

Any thoughts of wisdom???

I never took the center plate apart

But I do have a parts manual. The problem is it lists the parts but doesn't necessarily show the sequence in which they go together. BUT, the way the parts are shown and listed, I would assume the spring washer goes on the top side of the center plate, not between the clutch pinon and the center plate. I looked at my old center plate that leaked and even though I can't get a real good look from the under side, it does appear the spring washer is on the top half of the center plate and would be under the agitator drive shaft seal.

Funny that you responded first. I almost shot you an email to give me a call. I figured since you have pulled yours apart more times than you wished that you would have the answer.

I was having the same problem with the parts list. I guess they didn't make exploded diagrams back then like they do now. I also assume you are correct about the spring washer placement but will wait for others to confirm it. I just hope I can get the shaft seal back off without ruining it.

I never took my center plate apart. Either of them. Once I figured out the Center Plate had a bad bearing and was causing the leaking problem, I switched it out with the one that came with the E Bay power unit. One day I tried taking the old one apart out of morbid curiosity but I couldn't get the pin out. I actually bent a punch trying so I quit. It's been 6 weeks now and that washer is working like a champ now!

Didn't you get a new one from Phil? And if so wasn't it pre-assembled as a unit?

Yes, I did get a new centerplate from Phil but that was for my E2L which I added the the pump So it's a E2LP now! I've had it up and running for a month now and works great. I never did post any completed pics of though.

This centerplate is for a J2L I picked up and am adding a pump to it. I finally got it all painted... it took a while as I had to wait for 50 degree days to paint it but got it done. Now It's time to put it all back together...

I bet you're glad you added the pump. I'm really glad I did. Or I should say replaced the pump. Mine was a E2LP from the factory but somewhere along the line someone removed it. I never thought a pump would make that big a difference over just lowering the hose to a floor drain but the difference is HUGE. The pump ROCKS!

Originally the pump was a $10.00 option. For 10 bucks, who wouldn't add one? But back in those days $10.00 was a lot of money. My Grandmother's Speed Queen was used in the kitchen and didn't have a pump. It didn't even have a hose. You put a bucket under the spigot and when the bucket was full, you shut it off by pushing in a lever and emptied the bucket into the sink or out the window! How primitive! So I can't help but think when I'm using mine how a pump would have made things so much easier for my Grandma. The old gal wouldn't have an Automatic. "They don't wash as well" she'd say. I think she was onto something!
