Need help with antique Maytag model 30 Washer

Hello! I am new to this forum and I just got an antique Maytag model 30 washer from 1935. Im trying to disasemble it for restoration but it is giving me problems. I cant get the agitator off and I cant get the transmission cover off. I took the transmission cover nuts off and pryed it apart but it wont come apart more than an inch. How do I get the agitator off and the tranmission cover off?

Hi Cody

And welcome.

You can sometimes get the agitator off if you can fill the tub with hot water, and let sit for and hour.
This depends on if the tub will hold water.
Check and see if ther are any holes in the tub from underneath (under the agitator) and make sure your drain hose is O.K
Sometimes these can be very difficult to remove, depends on how long it's been on there without being cared for.
I've been told that someone had to use a 2 by 6 across the the top, two straps under the agitator and a floor jack to pull it straight up, and off.
Someone will come by soon that knows more about your model, and give you more info on the transmission cover.

Hi Cody,

I just replied to some comments on the first video of my Model 30 restoration on YouTube. I'm assuming you're one and the same.

As I mentioned in my reply to you on YouTube, I suggest the same as Stan has just done, with the hot water approach. As poor as the aesthetic condition was when I got mine, amazingly, the mechanical aspect seems to be fine. It runs beautifully - probably has the original oil in the transmission! So I've never taken mine apart, although one day I'm sure I will.

There are a few members here that have either the Model 30 or Model A (almost identical) so hopefully you'll get some more suggestions. Too bad you're so far away - I'd love to help you with it! I think they are such cool old machines!

Thank you all for the help! My machine wont hold water. It has very bad corrosion that has turned the aluminum into blue powder that has collected in the sediment trap. I discovered several holes and the agitator drive shaft is fused inside the center tube which is fused to the agitator. The drain tap has almost completely corroded away. There is a hole that has corroded co0mpletely through the agitator. The more I look at it, the less hope I have for it. I might end up just buying another machine that is in better shape. I will probably use this machine as a parts machine. I believe that it is beyond repair.

Think about a trip to Early, Iowa

Cody, I'm sorry to hear that it looks beyond hope. From where did you get yours? They do occasionally appear on Craigslist or Ebay - in fact, I saw one from Colorado a little while ago.

Then, there's always "Hardware Hank" in Early, Iowa. When I was there last August there were still a few available. You could always contact the proprietor, Dick Sanders, in advance of a trip there.

Sorry I didnt see your previous post. Yes, Im EnerG15. I havent checked my comments on youtube so I didnt know that you responded. I got my washer off of Craigslist. It was free so the problems it has are expected. I have found another one on craigslist that is the 1927 model. It is missing the motor but the corroded washer that I have has a good motor that I can put on it.
