Need to replace Mav4755aww agitator/auger but it’s part number is discontinued

Hello Everyone,

I read the agitator swaps with intrigue from this forum. Before I assume I can swap agitators like the pros on this forum I wanted to ask.

The 27001230 current part is discontinued and the machine the mav4755aww agitator is broken does not work and in fact caused the transmission to lock up. The agitator is a single piece so not kit can be used to replace the parts and the dog teeth are broken, they are crunching and causing the transmission lock up.

Can I simply take any other agitator from a belt driven machine and swap it like 285565 or 22001821?

your machine is a Norge design machine.....badged by Maytag....as in not a true Maytag....

so the standard Maytag pitman or orbital transmission agitators wont fit....

basically there were only two that fit this machine, a solid straight vane, or the 2 piece auger version....

what does concern me is you mention that because the auger is not working that it is locking up the transmission.....auger functioning or not, will not cause the trans to lock up...you may have more issues going on than the agitator....

these machines are prone for two things, transmission issues and pump failures...

I understand what you mean. The auger or agitator was not listed as a cause for the lock up. But when I remove the auger the transmission works and runs through the cycle. This machine spins clockwise and that triggers the auger. The only thing I see if that the cam in the agitator engaged and it locked up.

The picture in your reply is for the two piece auger. Is that the 22001821?

how about a pic of your agitator....

and/or how does it differ from the one pictured?....

there were some variants to the auger/fabric softener.....but the base on all were the same...

for the most part, these were not serviceable, as in replacing the dogs or being able to disassemble them...if it malfunctioned, which was rare, you replaced the whole agitator...

Look similar but has the fabric softener cup. Some websites show the auger 27001230 and relevant kits 285811 but this 27001230 is not serviceable.

you can ask and verify for yourself if this agitator will fit your machine...

but just the same, you have a MAV/Norgetag machine.....there were not many agitators that were offered....

although by different models, there were some variables of the auger.....

these are held in place by a bolt, located down in the center of the auger...

P/N 285811 repair kit is not for your agitator.  It's for a different design used on Whirlpool, Kenmore, Roper, etc.  Possibly some Maytag models produced by Whirlpool after 2006 but not yours.

285565 agitator won't work.  It's Whirlpool which among other differences mates to a taller transmission drive shaft, your drive shaft is too short.

22001821 or 22004042 linked at eBay may or may not work.  Can't tell from the photo if yours has a shallower base.  Maybe someone else knows for sure, or you could take a chance on buying one or the other to check the fit yourself (that eBay seller takes returns for 30 days).

As mentioned above, a problem with the auger should not make the transmission jam.  The auger mechanism does not connect directly to the transmission, it sits passively atop the agitator base and is driven (in one direction, free-spins in the other direction) only by the oscillation of the base.  The pump can break internally in a way that can cause it to jam which can impair agitation or spin or both.  Or the transmission can break internally.

Can you take a video of the agitation problem?  Can't upload videos into posts here like a photo ... put the video on YouTube or other sharing site (make sure it's not set to private view) and place a link to it in a reply.

the motor runs clockwise, turning the tub and auger counterclockwise which would agitate by turning the base and then top of the auger. When I first came to the problem the motor had overheated as the thrust assembly was locked in place. I removed the auger and the motion returned to the tub.

I placed the auger back and engaged the spin cycle and then the wash to move the tub clockwise and then anti clockwise. The auger then internally broke as the base was free and it crushed the dog ears. Now the machine will run with no agitation and it grinds at the auger.

For the transmission if it had failed would that be possible to still spin and turn the central arm. I will ask at the link if they think it can work.

The eBay seller suggests that this doesn’t fit. For the base comparison, is it the pitch of the cone that determines the fit?

Validating Yogitunes and DADoES the transmission is shot. I took the auger off to see if the shaft was turning and it wasn’t! So I am looking for a new machine.

The Amana was a brand mentioned. What about Maytag not rebadged versions any Transmission Failure

Another reason the washer won’t agitate but spins is transmission failure. The transmission helps move the agitator back and forth.

Solution: Check the input shaft inside the agitator. If the input shaft turns but the agitator doesn’t, the transmission may need to be replaced.

what type of Maytag are you referring to?:

pitman drive...

orbital drive...

direct drive...

VMW design...

top load...

front load...

In the case of the top of front I would prefer the front loader. For the drives which is the more gentle on the clothes. This washer was rough.

belt drive, direct drive....neither has any effect of gentleness of washing...

based on information given, your safest bet is to get a Speed Queen front loader, it most likely will be the last machine you ever buy...

The pricing I saw for the speed queen looks like the top or front loaders are a couple of thousand. Any budget recommendations?

you get what you pay for....it is your money, and your choice

you already have the budget version of a Maytag, and where did that leave you?

most appliances today dont have a long life cycle, its hit or miss, and there are a few exceptions, but most only last 3 to 5 years, and maybe upwards of 7.....usually once the short warranty runs out...

if anything, invest in a good extended warranty, your going to need it...better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it....Lowes offers an interesting extended warranty, if you dont use it, they will refund 2/3rds the price to you at the end of the term....

take a ride behind Lowes or HomeDepot, and see how many machines are there sitting in the scrap pile....
