There were literally minutes left when I stopped at one of my old "haunts" Thursday afternoon and saved this wonderful old Maytag from being trashed. Literally minutes! Was it my "sixth" sense that drew me to this place that afternoon or can I just "smell" out old washers that are in distress?

Get this. The guy who was trashing it told me that he had been told the tranny was shot in it and not worth replacing. They had seemingly turned it on in agitate and spin modes and it made a terrible racket so they were dumping it. I asked if they had checked the belts and he said he didn't think they had after listening to it. Well, we turned it over and there were NO belts on it! He stopped what he was doing, went and got two used belts, put them on and it agitated and spinned just fine. He sensed my excitement and said at that point that he thought the machine should go home with me so rolled it over and put it on my truck.

It had a hole in the agitator and he attempted to get it out for me but in trying to lift it up and out of the machine, one big piece between two of the vanes broke off. He went and fetched me a newer black one with power fins and said to saw or chisel the old one off. Now all I have to do is find a new lower pump grain hose and fill hose and at this point I think that is all that will be needed.

I've always wanted an old Maytag like this. I'm curious about the year tho. It's a model A500 Serial #316754LL. I also have to find out how to get the lid up so I can replace the fill hose and aireator.

I'm a happy camper at this point but I don't know what all the "Lady" Kenmores are going to say about the newcomer!

1963?

Looks like it will be a nice machine, Dick. To remove the top, you first take off the chrome band (put some tape on a screwdriver and twist it under the band gently and it will pop off) then remove the six screws around all 3 sides and tip the top back. You'll see the air-break and hose assembly on the left side of the washer.

Good luck and enjoy the gyrafom action!

1963?

Thanks gansky for the tip on getting the top up. Even tho' I have other things needing my attention this weekend, I just might tinker with it tomorrow. And finding out it's a 1963 suits me just fine!
Thanks again. Dick

Nice looking machine Dick. I had one simular to yours. Mine was a time-filled Highlander. Washed great! Hope to see closer up shots of the panel and in the Tub!

I have a 1964 Maytag A300 Custom Highlander that looks just like that machine. Mine is a single speed, and the little diamond above the timer does NOT light up.

My machine is a great performer, and I'd put up against ANYTHING for cleaning ability. My Whirly/Kenmo's were "kicked to the curb"!

Hope you enjoy your new find!

Yes, I know I'll be quite happy with this old Maytag. I've used my friend's Maytag every now and then when I'm in LB and have always enjoyed watching the way it handles rollover very nicely. Can't wait to find the time to start preparing it for it's first load.
Rich-I'll most gladly take some more pix at that time. Maybe I'll get a chance to say hello to you when I'm in Seattle this fall.
Steve-I'm not familiar with the cycle set ups on Maytags (well not yet anyway) but mine has a gentle fabric button. From what you mentioned in your post, you have me curious now as to whether I will find a slower speed on it when I fire it up. BTW, very nice pictures of your fabulous weekend. AND, I've got to hunt down and aigi-tamer. I've heard mixed reviews about them but when I read what Austin said, I think I became a believer. I've got an old 61 Whirpool with a black bakelite surger on it that just won't budge and I certainly doin't want to break the agitator like what happened with the old gyrator in the Maytag.
Ross-Yes you will see it in action when you visit.
And Ben, Bob and Kenney-thanks for your comments.

Dick, lower-end models of this machine didn't have the regular action & gentle action buttons. There was a fill-in dummy button, so to speak, that simply said automatic washer on it, like Gryafoam's.

No Dummy

Lots of the Highlander cabinet style came with 2 speeds and were not timed fill.
