Water Level Not Subject to Setting
I have seen others discuss this topic, trying to adjust a front load machine so the water level is higher. The general consensus seems to be that the water level in front loaders are not subject to setting. They are designed to be super efficient (read use must less water). The new top-of-the line Kenmore front loader has a special setting, something like skin care that will give a really wet rinse I am told.
The new Maytag Neptune does not have this setting. However, and this is something you will need to try for yourself, the Quick Laundry setting seems to be much wetter than the other wash cycles. That is my observation, but then again when I did my "Quick" washing, it was only a few items. So I can't be certain if the extra wet look of this washing was due to the setting or to the fact that I was washing just a few clothes!
I really fault the Neptune manual in that it provides so very little information! For instance, it spells out that these are the wash cycles, and then it lists them with just a bare description of when you would want to use them. It doesn't tell you how the wash settings differ from one another.
Another MIA piece of information is how the internal water heater is utilized. In fact, the manual never directly mentions that the machine has an internal water heater! It does mention that some water temp setting are ATC, but no mention of whether the temperature control is done with the internal water heater or through mixing the Hot and Cold waters. It doesn't mention any temperature level for hot and hot is not marked as ATC. I would presume (and hope) that the hot setting utlizes the internal heater, but no way to tell from reading the manual. I addressed this issue with the repairman when he reported and he told me that although they learned how to tear the machine apart, they never learned why and how the machine operates.
Any case, back to your issue, I am certain the ping issues merits a service call. When the repairman comes out to fix the ping issue, you can bring up about the musty smell issue. You can ask him to determine if the water level is at the correct level. I think that will be your only hope to have something done about the water level. Frankly, however, I am afraid even the repairman wouldn't be able to reset the water level, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
My best advise is to get a call in for service right away. Good luck. Please post back and let us know how it turns out!
