in 1969 when i was 13 my aunt and uncle bought me a hotpoint dishwasher for 10 bucks from a plumbing store in cinti. it was in back of their store in a junk pile when i found it. i spent the next 2 years working on it and basically destroying almost everything i touched!
when i was done i had replaced the motor, pump, detergent cup element, and a host of other parts! but it finally ran. i then put sides on it and we made a top out of wood. i painted in coppertone (you could buy appliance coppertone paint in those days) and put it on casters.
but it leaked like crazy around the left side of the door even after a new gasket. so we left it in the basement and my aunt and i would cart the dishes down from the 2nd floor kitchen every day to wash them!
i felt it was a complete success and we continued to wash our dishes that way until i bought her a new g.e. dishwasher 2 years later. i cannot remember whatever became of that little hotpoint that started it all for me!
i had another one in the late 70's i picked up at the curb and i continued to see them occasionally throughout the decade. then they disappeared. i have not seen one since.
until now!
this was advertised here off of craigs list in san diego. i knew it was my old hotpoint from the style of the pump so i bought it and had jim bring it to me. it arrived the week before christmas! completely wrapped in celephane!
