We bought a new medicine cabinet at HD and it had large mirror coating scratches right out of the box. So we went back to exchange it, all of their remaining three units had the same problem. Not sure what's up with Koehler's quality control, but we finally returned it and went with one online, at the link below.

Gotta say night and day when it's so imo, and this is heads and shoulders above anything we've seen from other manufacturers. The frame is ribbed aluminum (no flex whatsoever), all exterior surfaces are mirrored etc, the beveled glass and coating quality are flawless. What we don't understand is, it was only $20 more than the Koehler ($170 vs. 150). The only explanation we can come up with is that Koehler these days is riding almost entirely on name brand recognition instead of product quality. Anyway highly recommended in our opinion.

Where are they both manufactured? Even though better made maybe the one you ended up with is foreign made and Kohler is US made? Maybe that would explain only $20 more. Just a thought.

I'm guessing blaming union labor would be step two. :)

Also wanted to throw in a plug for Robern's shipping procedures. The cabinet arrived completely double boxed with solid 10" foam padding between the two. Very impressive and I'm sure it has something to do with the mirrors not being scratched in transit.[this post was last edited: 6/24/2014-14:56]

Wow. Thanks for the info. Makes the difference in quality even harder to account for imo.

Wonder if Home Despot sells a lower end range (like an outlet mall line) than the primary Robern.

Davey, it wouldn't surprise me. Regardless of what it is (we had the same experience at HD recently with lawn mowers) they seem to carry more expensive and less capable/desirable models of just about everything. It's like a punishment ground for people who prefer buying things in person instead of online.

Jeff - wouldn't be surprised. I'm glad I can go to a local hardware store and get stuff or if I really need something, there are a couple of specialized hardware stores, one high end and another that specializes in things needed in vintage buildings around.
