Hi all

I have just got a new Bosch Exxcel Express SGS56E12 dishwasher. It's great but I've had a hell of a time getting it. Here is a pic of it the rest of the story!

Miele G977

I had decided to buy a Miele. I wasn't sure on the cutlery tray though and had to think of cost, so I ordered a Miele G977.

Unfortunately, it couldn't be delivered when we wanted it and my partner decided it was too much, so I had to cancel the order.

Kenwood (not recommended)

In a rush in Currys my partner decided he liked the Kenwood pictured below. I had my reservations but it was cheap at £249 and did look nice. The trays also seemed reasonable so we took it there and then.

As soon as I got home and came to my senses I regretted it. The top tray in particular was a bad design and saucers just fell like a pack of stacked cards. Also a dodgy sticker on the front had marked the stainless steel. At first Currys didn't want to take it back but finally agreed (thank god)!

The moral is never rush into any purchase.

The Bosch

I decided in the end to go for a middle range Bosch. I have to say the Exxcel is brilliant. It washes well and has very well designed trays. I like the fact I can move the cutlery basket around to any part of the dishwasher. It is also nice and quiet.

Programmes

I really like the programmes which I will probably use all -

Intensive 70 (a must)
Auto 55-65 (for most everyday soiling)
Daily 50 (for lighter soiling)
Quick/Delicate 45 (only lasts 29 mins and ends with a 55 degree rinse to leave things at least a bit dry)
Pre-rinse

Any questions feel free to ask.

Rob

That looks like a good machine! But the racks are a bit strange... I think it would make me a bit confused at first. It's also strange that all the cycles are marked as "quick", how long do they run apart of the 29 minutes one?
Thank you. Gabriele

Bosch Express Programmes

This seems to be trend with Bosch to put the quickest cycles upfront, and have the longer more energy efficient cycles available ONLY with a button press or two.

With my older Bosch dishwaher, the energy-efficient progs are available upfront, but take an age to complete. There is a 'time reduction' option, but you have to hunt through the menu.

I imagine that pressing the 'ECO' button lengthens the Bosch Express's programmes.

Kenwood dishwashers:

DO NOT touch with a bargepole!!!

Made in China, poor upper racks (parts break and fall off); opening door during cycle can flood the bottom spillage tray - flood protection activates! In some cases poor electrical clearance causes flood water to short-circuit.

Use of multi-function tablets can cause same effect (with or without a separate rinse aid in that dispenser).

You have had a very lucky escape!

Hi guys thanks for your comments

Toggleswitch - Hi there, I'm yet to try the 29 minute wash but it would probably be good for a light buffet. My old Zanussi only cold rinsed the load on quick wash meaning you would have to dry it up, useless really. I think you are right about the tray thing in the sense that it depends what you are used to. I was brought up with Hotpoint/Bosch machines so are used to their layout which as hardly changed.

Rolls Rapide and GadgetGary - Yes the Eco button makes the program twice as long but reduces the temp. Good for overnight running.

DJ-Gabriele - the first 2 progs are about 90 mins, I think the daily is around 60. The pre-rinse is 19. The other button is a half load switch. It says you can load the machine anywhere and it will reduce the water and time.

Rolls Rapide - The Kenwood, I think you are right! It was a silly decision I was rushed into. My partner and I were fed up in the rush of the January sales and our old machine had started flooding. I think we had a little row-ette in the shop LOL! I was relieved to return it! The upper basket was awful and plates collapsed. Alan soon realised too!

Here is an ad from the 70s of the Hotpoint made by Bosch, not a lot has changed really.

It never fails to amuse me...

...that machines have "unique" features - even though they come from the same factory:

"...Hotpoint's unique Acousticlad insulation..."

I presume Bosch models also had such insulation, and Siemens, etc.

All the B/S/H stuff

is the same quality, rolls off the same production lines and shares the same engineering. The only difference is the snob appeal.
Same with a lot of the Miele cooling products...with a few minor exceptions, you are paying double or triple the price for the privilege of that Miele label, but have the same excellent innards as the least expensive Siemens product.
This does NOT apply to their dishwashers and laundry range.
We had a Kenwood for a while, built in the 70's. Was an excellent machine. What a pity that they no longer are.
Now that so much of B/S/H is outsourced to cheap shit made in China, will there be any good stuff left at all...hold on to your vintage products, folks - the way things are going it only makes sense.

Siemens

Nice one Rob, I had the previous version to this and now have the Siemens integrated, gosh 6yrs now, it been an absolute workhorse, and so quiet & efficient, I love the 70d wash and the one basket eco prog, also the glasses as well, mostly use the 50 - 60 auto with less time, usually takes the programme to 92 mins etc...those dark racks just complement it as well!!!

Very nice machine. The wash system looks alot like what we have here in the States for the upper end of the Bosch line. I know when we were looking to replace the Fisher & Paykel POS we checked out what Bosch had to offer and almost bought it.
On the cycles they say "Quick" above each one...are they faster time wise?

Wow

A great looking machine, and fantastic wash times :)

My Miele takes around 2hours on the sensor wash 55-65 program.

How much of the 90mins is drying time? Is the drying heat assisted or fan and condensor based?

Hi there, sorry for the late response, very rude of me!

The Quick does make a difference and I would say it cuts down the wash times by a third. The auto prog the other day on lasted about an hour, although the soiling was light.

This machine uses condensor based drying, which is a shame because I think fan assisted would be better. Having said that it does a good job.
