My sweet home... Chicago
Sorry for the lack of detail. I'll make this question VERY generic.
My Mother-In-Law is replacing her dishwasher. ( I think it is a 10 year old Maytag ).
They live in rural Illinois. Local appliance dealer is showing her GE and Maytag.
She wants a stainless-steel interior. She likes the adjustable racks on the GE.
The GE is model is perhaps S650S or perhaps F570S .
Maytag model unknown.

To those people who have their finger on the pulse of modern dishwashers selling today...
What would you choose - generically speaking..
GE or Maytag?
I think reliability is the key thing here. The old Maytag lasted ten years but didn't thrill her overall.
Features that are more deluxe are probably second.
Thanks for any comments.

I think either would be fine. GE has more choices. I like the Maytag's stainless steel washer arms. The modern GE's are excellent cleaners, from what I've heard from people that have them.

I like GE.

I got 3 GE Artistry Series dishwashers for my tenants. They use GE's latest mechanism, but have plastic tanks. Thus far, my tenants like them. I lived with one for a year and found the performance to be good and the noise to be minimal. The build quality was definitely lacking, but all dishwashers seem to be like that when you're used to Kitchen Aid by Hobart.

The thing I like about the GE design as opposed to the Whirlpool/Maytag designs at the time is that the control buttons act directly on the control unit as opposed to being part of a membrane connected to the control unit via a ribbon cable. When I worked in the appliance parts store, I learned that the controls are expensive, and the membranes are also expensive. Determining if one or the other had failed is difficult By eliminating one of those parts, I think the GE would be easier to diagnose and repair in the future.

Just my 2 cents.

Best new dishwasher for reliability and for the money

Maytag is definitely a better choice than General Electric, the GE's as others have mentioned have a terrible build quality.

The GE's are very flimsy and have terrible racks that just don't accommodate things or hold things well.

If they had a Maytag that was 10 years old it was likely the old real Maytag tall tub which was never a great dishwasher.

Maytag

I'll give a nod to the Maytag.

I have the current GE system in my dishwasher, and it's quite good.
And the quality is FINE.

But...it had a filter that needs cleaning.

For elderly people (or anyone who doesn't know machines period), I'd recommend the Maytag because it has a more traditional grinder and sealed, self-cleaning filter that will be fully maintenance free.
GE has also tweaked their drying ability.
But I will endorse the Maytag's upper rack over the GE's.

Both machines clean very well when loaded properly and with high quality soap.

Good luck.

Similarity...

Long time GE user, mine is 7 or 8 years old but I still really like it.  One consideration for your MIL is the racking.  Is the new Maytag similar to the old one she is used to?  I'm on my 3rd GE DW in 30+ years.  Had the famed 2700 for many years  then it went bad, replaced with a mid line  GE that was OK.  It died in a few years.  Replaced it with a Whirlpool, I used it for 3 weeks until I could no longer stand the racking.  HATED IT!  Went back to a Ge and I've been very happy.

Learning a new racking system is a challenge and can take some time.  At this point I could load my DW with my eyes closed..

Thanks / and a bit more info

You all hit on a few key points.
Indeed, these people are elderly, but sharp minded. They can handle a dishwasher just fine, but if it is a "fussy" dishwasher, it won't be liked much in the long run.

I believe the old dishwasher is a Maytag tall-tub about ten years old or perhaps more. A previous comment that this dishwasher was not great really fit the bill. Right now it "operates" but the racks are literally falling apart. The machine was not used too hard.

Thanks for the great input. Much obliged to all.

Not that I would recommend a Miele for elders in this case

But a co-worker mentioned this...
She owns a Miele dishwasher. Hates it.
It apparently monitors everything, then hiccups every six months requiring a service call.
She could not completely describe what the issue is, other than it is a filter of some sort. When she asked the repairman about how to stop the machine from requiring service every six months, he shrugged and suggested she just has to live with it.
Do you know what she is talking about?
My Kitchenaid is 10 years old and has had to be repaired seven times. Next time it breaks it goes to the curb. I was thinking about Miele. However if it is a "fussy" machine that monitors everything and throws fits, maybe it is not something I want.
Comments on Miele?

Mieles do have problems from time to time, that is undeniable, especially on the lower end of the price spectrum they have tendency to just seize up their pumps at the 6-8 year mark.

I'd really ask her to look up on her repair bills what is wrong because that sounds verry odd. Usualy, with Mieles, its something bigger like a pump or a valve breaking, but that dosen't happen every 6 months. And the description "some filter" isn't really helpfull either, any mechanical filter on these machines is 100% user servicable.

Personally, I love the racking of Mieles as it's verry flexibel with odd shaped items and mixed loads. Cleaning is super as well. However, not everybody is abled to adapt to the loading and especially in the US, service can be a pain.
