I did it today. Bought new GE front loaders that is. They will be delivered tomorrow. I got the set for $1550 with a full 5 year warranty. I hope they will be everything I think they will be. We chose them over the Whirlpool Cabrio because of price mainly, but we have always wanted front loaders. I'll let you know about them and put in a few pics soon. Does anyone else out there have them? What do you think?

They're Here!

...and they are working like a charm. Gentle and quiet like a FL should. They seem very sturdily build. They older gentleman that delivered them said "You all will be set on a W/D for a long long time. These are good machines. Just follow the instructions and watch the DVD that comes with the set. They won't give you no trouble." I really hope he is right. This makes the third new washer we have had in 10 years. Tim
 
It's always exciting to get a new laundry appliance, isn't it? Is this your first front-loader? You mentioned this is the third set you've had in 1- years. What were your other two? Congratulations and many happy, care-free washloads to you.
 
Front loader

I'm pretty excited. Yes, this is the first front-loader. My other two were a 1996 GE el crappo all plastic mistake and a 1999 Kenmore 90 series. The Kenmore was pretty good up until lately and it started knocking and making all kind of noise during spin. The GE was never that good. When I bought it, I knew nothing about washers. I recognized the name. My wife's grandfather had worked for GE for 30 years and we thought we would be fine with a new GE. Boy was I mistaken. It lasted about 2 years. The repairman wouldn't even fix it.

Now the salesman who sold me the new GE's said that this FL set was a true GE. He said they had sold many of them and they were working fine. He also said he had a set for 4 years. Anyway, I bought the 5 year warranty. I'll try to put in a pic. The machines are very attractive, but our laundry area is not. But, I guess the machines are all anyone wants to see.

GE

I had a plastic 1997 GE toploader that went nine years, then it went bust and was unrepairable. The repairman said I was lucky to get nine years out of it, because they were built so poorly. It was replaced with a Frigidaire frontloader and matching dryer in a stacked configuration.
 
The salesman who said he had the same set for 4 years may be lying.The new models(made in China)with the 3.8 cu ft capacity have only been out 2 years max.The only other front loading models with GE's logo on them are the badged Frigidaire's made in Agusta,Ga.Their openinigs are smaller as well as their drums.Especially the dryers(5.7 cu ft.)$799/washer & $699/elec dryer would have been the average price on those not including the 5 years of service( Home Depot sells an addition 4 years pts & labor for only $89.99)
 
Let me clarify

I didn't mean the salesman had the same exact set as I bought. He just said he had a GE set.

Still liking them

I have a question about good detergents. We are using liquid Tide HE. It's ok, but doesn't do well on whites. What are some brands that you guys have tried and like? Does Fresh Start do well in FL? Sears brand? Thanks, Tim

I've been a huge Method fan for a while.
Their soaps clean very well, while being environmentally friendly.
You can find them at Target. I've been using the Method laundry detergent for 3 years now and won't be switching anytime soon. You can use the Method soap in a TL or a FL.
 
Fresh Start?

Tim, I see that you live in Georgia, I live in Savannah and would love to know where to get Fresh Start. Target doesn't carry it, nor does the Kroger, Publix, or Piggly Wiggly. Where, oh where, can I find some Fresh Start?
Fresh Start is a low-sudsing detergent, so it may be ok in a front loader, but I don't know for sure. Try some old-fashioned soap for whites. Someone else can tell you how to make it, but I believe it is equal parts grated Fels Naptha soap, washing soda, and borax. Hot wash, and warm, if hot is not available, rinse.

I wonder what the guy meant by "True GE"; that it was made in China where so many other GE products are manufactured? I hope that you have good service and lots of fun with them. I use Tide HE powder with STPP for most white and light color loads in my front loaders with good results, for what it's worth.
 
Thanks guys. I knew I could count on you to help me out. The Sears brand seems very cost effective and readily available to me. I would have to order the Fresh Start, which is no problem if it works better than Sears or Tide HE. I know Fresh Start first came out in the late 70's or early 80's, but it was made for TLs right? Will it work in FLs as an HE detergent? Is it's cleaning power as good as its smell?

Is the Method brand powder or liquid?

So I guess my question is Fresh Start or Sears?

I'm not sure what he meant by true GE. Probably just sales line. Maybe he meant that they are better than the first FL GE made a few years ago that were really rebadged Frigidaires. Mine looks an awful lot like a Kenmore. I am very happy with them so far. I did buy the extended warranty. The service man came out and leveled them for me. He showed me how to do the bleach wash and how to clean the filter. By the way, what is the STPP that you mentioned with Tide HE?

Current detergents and their features

I have the Kitchen Ensemble set and have used regular(not H.E.)detergents finding 4 of them absolutely effective in stain removal with HOT or WARM wash water.I pretreat the stains using the liquid( full strength) directly on the stain then rub the fabric to be sure of pennatration of the liquid.The brands I have tried and currently use are: 1.Gain with Bleach
2.Tide with Bleach
3.Cheer with Bleach
4.Wisk with Bleach

Gain smells great and I also use their softner(the one with the green lid on the bottle has the same aroma as this detergent.)but not on towels or anything that needs absorbtion.Fabric softners having a wax in them that takes the absorbancy away and can make stains that need another soaking permanent ones.
 
Fresh Start Detergent

I e-mailed the company to ask if Fresh Start could be used in a FL HE machine. Here is the response I got back:

"Dear Sir/Madam:

I am unfamiliar with a HE machine. This is just as effective as any other clothes washing liquid in a standard washing machine.

I don't think she is too familiar with Fresh Start, do you? She thinks it is liquid.

So is it safe to use in my machine? Does anyone know?

Should be. I get absolutely NO suds with Fresh Start in my F&P toploader, during either the EcoActive or deep wash phase with a full-cap dose.
 
Sears HE Detergent

I use that Sears HE Free detergent as well in my 3.5 cu.ft. FrigeMore, and I like it fine. However, my Sears doesn't sell the free-of-dyes-and-perfume variant any more. It wasn't in the online offerings either the last time I looked for it.
 
Detergent

I think I will try the Sears brand. I can order the Fresh Start later when someone can tell me if they have used it in a FL or not. Tim
 
I really like

The SA-8, and my Persil. I am not a big fabric softener guy as of lately.Clothes seem to come out fine w/o it. Congrade on your new set. I am on my second new set in ten years.Although, the new ones have been pretty trouble free.
PS----Does your washer have an online water heater? I know that once Tide HE heats up,,it gets weird, when I say heat, i am talking over 140 F,
 
Let us know how the wash times are. One of the things owners of the larger GE FL machines complained about was excessive wash times.
They are a nice looking set.

You could also try some Persil. It's available at most vacuum stores that sell Meile vacs. We've been using it on and off for a year or so and really love it.
 
Wash Times

I don't really think the wash times are any longer than in other FLs. The longest time is the Whites cycle it is 1:45. Mine does not have the internal heater though. I have used the Speed Cycle lots. It is only 38 min, and it does great on lights and darks.

I have heard a lot about Persil on this site, but have never seen any in my vac store and they do sell Mieles. Actually, I have been filling the detergent dispenser to MAX with liquid Tide HE and it has been doing much better. At first, I was not filling the dispenser to the top. I will use this bottle of Tide then try something else. I do think I will go with a powder next time--probably powdered Tide HE or Sears HE powder.

Don't let him fool you...

Jetcone's clothes are all stiff and scratching because he uses those Bendii Duolintmatics that pull all the fibers out and leaves things threadbare...
