Hello my name is Richard, I am 33 and live in the North East of England (UK) near Durham. I am sort of new and sort of not ! I popped on about 3 years ago to ask for help with my British built 1965-66 Bendix washer dryer. I bougt it on E bay it had never been used since it was purchased new and had languished in a pantry till i took it home. I needed help to get it going safely but as i was still restoring my home I did not have the time to share it with you (or the computer ability!) Quite a few of you answered my questions and Greg (Gansky) sent over some photos (Thanks it helped).

Any way the Bendix is still going strong and is a real talking point and i hopefully have created a link that you can visit and share my photos. (PS start at bottom and work up )

If you have any questions i will try to answer them.

Congrats on the website chaps!

Richard, an absolutely beautiful house. I particularly love your kitchen colours. An awesome Bendix. What's the wash & dry load capacities? A couple of questions for the Bendix: (1) I'd love to know what all the buttons do/are for (2) is the right "dial" a timer for the dryer function or is it simply a "place-holder" on the control panel; (3) how do you set various temperatures for washing for the heater (4) what's a wheel jack?

Oh, and BTW, another Texas howdy & welcome back. Bob

I remember this machine! I think of it everytime I see one of those toy/dollhouse models on ebay. Glad to hear it's working so well and you're enjoying it. What a trip to see those wheels on it - was that a standard feature for these machines?

Welcome back and thanks for the pics of your beautiful kitchen & laundry, looking forward to seeing more of your collection!

Greg

Yeah, I'll echo the above comments; your entire kitchen setup is great; all it needs is a GPO 741 wall phone in ivory:-).

Interesting to see the inside of your fridge. Seems that the shelf spacing wouldn't accommodate the usual American gallon container of milk, but I've heard that in England you can still get milk delivered to your doorstep daily so you could get a couple of pints fresh each day and not need to store as much at once. There's much to be said for doing things that way.

So that Bendix unit was never used? Amazing find, that; and now you've got it running it should be good for another 50 years.

People do tend to have interesting reactions when they see Old Stuff operating as if it was new. It's downright subversive: totally undermines the "throw-away" mentality.

Thank you!!

Hi thanks for the warm (button 3and 4) see later!! welcome
to answer a few questions , firstly Bob the controls panel has 5 buttons and after you have set the wash timer for the required time pressing 1 will do a near boil wash, 3 warm rinses, long spin, 2 will do a "hot" wash 3 warm rinses and long spin, 3 will do "warm" wash 3 warm rinses and long spin and 4 will do "warm" wash 3 cold rinses and intermittent spin. pressing 5 activates the dryer and you simply set the right hand dial to the time needed, so it will wash rinse spin and dry without any further help (although i never leave it alone). Its quite clever if you select a warm wash and the incoming water is too hot it adds cold in short bursts, and if the dry time if set too long and the clothes are dry it shuts off, quite modern features me thinks! it holds 9lbs dry weight for a wash and i think up to 6 lb for drying. I tend to use programes 2 and 4 but always rinse in cold and use my little spin dryer if i am to tumble dry, this means a full load of towels are usually dry in 40 -60 min.It has a wheel jack that you can use to hoist it up from its feet to four castors to wheel around the kitchen, as it was unusual at the time to have the space or extra cost of permanent plumbing, so the machine would be wheeled out and wheeled away when done ( a bit like your portable dishwashers)

And Design geek just to make you feel even more at home i have a baby blue western electric bell sytem wall phone with a 203 area code, re the milk it does not have a huge capacity i don't have a milk man but buy 1 or 2 pint plastic containers, but it has a great capacity for beer or wine! hopefully i have figured out how to reduce pixels to attach a photo of the phone.
Oh and yes i know the photos of me are a bit well naff but i was well a bit pissed i normally do all the photography but my friend was trying to take casual shots of me to put on gaydar as had just joined it, and believe it or not this was the best! but it never made gaydar (just as well!)

Howdy!! Your '66 Bendix Duomatic is one beautiful machine. It doesn't appear to be as wide as the US version of the same time either and fits perfectly in your kitchen!

Would love to see more pics of your collection.
