Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Interesting;

we only run ours once or twice weekly now since empty nesters unless it's a holiday, or gathering, so could actually suffice, but I'd want it built in.
So, Fisher & Paykel have that.

Been to Japan many times and spent time in their massive electrical departments. There are no full size dishwashers available in Japan, only these plastic bench top models. I guess most Japanese homes are very small so no room to full size dishwasher. Most Japanese homes have a top load washer outside or on the balcony. They only have cold fill and all Japanese wash in cold water only.

I remember an article from maybe 15 years ago which talked about how all the (wealthy) first world regions had moved to dishwashers except for Japan--it specifically stated that the gummy rice residue was too tough to shift (also talking about small kitchens etc etc). Don't recall if the article was "gender-roles" focused, "appliance industry" focused, "Japanese small living spaces" focused or what. Believe it mentioned that Panasonic tried one and it flopped badly.

China

I know from personal experience that the chinese - at least in the middle class - do barely ever own dishwashers.

They don't trust them.

To quote the grandma of my exchange student who was mainly tasked with cooking and washing up in my guest family: "Our items are to odd shaped and to greasy for me to trust them to some blind and dumb machine that just sprinkles them with water."
