New kitchen addition: 60's Frigidare Deluxe DW

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That is absolutely gorgeous! We are in the process of planning a kitchen remodel (well, we are about a week away from the tear out!) and are going to bend and get a dishwasher. I'd LOVE to find something like this. I don't like any of the modern dishwashers we have seen. This one is awesome!

Oh It's just beautiful Rich, congratulations! I love my Frigidaire Spray Tube dishwasher as well. Not too many of them left out there!

This thread should to into the Imperial Forum so I'm moving it there.

Alone with your drawers

Jenn Aire
I remember seeing the Jenn Aire going in and the bare wall when you had it prepped. Have you finshed the look? After the holidays and some time alone with the new range and ovens, can you tell me how you like them and some of the cool features they provide? I have always enjoyed hearing people talk about their new acquisitions and what the new relationship is like.

The biggest problem with the Frigidaire spray tube machines, was that their loading was too unconventional for users to adjust to. Owner's manuals were read by users about as infrequently as they are now. I had a close friend who used to complain about his, and when you looked at how he loaded it, there were dome-shaped items turned upside-down in the bottom rack and worse.

A picture is worth a thousand words....

then what does that make of a scan from an owner's manual? Hey Chuck, I have the manual to a '56 scaned. The top rack is different on your later unit, but the principles are the same. If you need any other pages, let me know.

Sorry for the delayed reply!

Some of you know that we are dealing with a family crisis (end of life) so we are not at the computer as much. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

I was so thrilled to see so many replies and thank you Swestoyz for the fantastic scans!!! Loading is a real issue. It is going to take some experimenting to get it right :-) The dishes, in the bottom, come out fantastic but the glasses on the top have been a problem. They don't seem to rinse thouroughly. I am trying different glasses at different angles so that the jets spray up into the glasses.

We are using a powder, enzyme detergent. Should we possibly try a tablet for the slower release? Perhaps it would last to the second wash OR does anyone think that a liquid would be better? I'm looking for opinions from you experts :-) We realy can't compare the Frigi with the GE just yet. We will have to give the Frigi a good try. If we can get the top to clean like the bottom then I can say that the Frigidaire is the winner!!! And quiet for it's vintage! I do love the splashing sound that it does make!

I will try to respond to some other questions or comments in seperate posts :-)

Alone with your drawers

I would have to say that the performance of the JennAir is very goo it does have its drawbacks. You can't have a very tall or wide pot on the stove nor can you easily pull long pasta out of a pan of boiling water. The oven kinda gets in the way. It's taken time to adjust but my motto has been (in regards to this remodel) "Form before function"!!! SHHHHH...Don't tell Chuck this :-) He's the practical one!

Hey Guys,

Hope you are doing as well as can be expected at this trying time!
The d/w LOOKS fantastic....
Back then, hot water was 140-160 degrees............can you say SCALDING???? Today's enzyme detergents are meant for 120-130 degree water. You might want to try a chlorine based detergent like Sunlight powder or powerpacks. The powerpacks might dissolve slowly and last through the second wash. (Is there a second wash)???
Do NOT use liquid dishwasher detergent.....not enough phosphates....don't clean as well even in a moderm machine. Hope to see you both soon!! Mom is home and doing well. Things are back to semi-normal...whatever the h**l that is !!

John, yes there is a "2nd" wash. The timer dial is divided into 4 main sections: Regular wash (which is the wash which happens after the initial purge). The next section is something like short wash, light wash, or china. That's anotehr "wash". The next section is Rinse & Dry. That consists of two more fills for rinising. The last section is dry/plate warmer. To use any of the otehr cycles, you turn the knob to the right until it stops (kinda like on a push-button Lady Kenmore). Then simple push the fig fat dial in and it starts with a drain. then the purge. Then the fill for the detergent wash. I don't rememember exactly, but there oculd be a 1-minute rinse inbetween the first wash andd the 2nd wash phase which begins at the short wash section. Rich & Chuck, I believe this version has a small power shower spinning from the top of the tub. This model was the first restyle of the initial Frigidaire dishwasher. And as pointed out,t he top rack is a little bit differently arranged, not quite as dep as Robert's 1956. Part of that is due to the row of bowl or small plate tines across the very middle of the top rack. Chuck my best suggestion is to keep angling the glasses, think of that spray as fimply fanning out from the center. The examples above are good. Also do not put larger things in front of smaller things. An example would be that large mixing bowl in the picture above. Think of one that's slightly smaller. The instruction manual says not to put something (like coffee cups) "behind" that bowl on the far outside of the rack. But, something like coffee cups or measuring cups could go on that far outside edge of the rack "behind" glasses. It's going to take some getting used to. Rich, you're pretty much repeating just exactly what I heard housewives complain about glases out of this machine in 1963-1967. Like I said above, I somehow had a "knack" for loading everything in the top rack such that that they told me glasses looked betterr after I'd loaded the machine. And it is fun to just sit in front of the machine while it's running, it's very soothing and peaceful. Wish y'all didn't have so much going on in your lives right now, would love to have y'all send me some pics of loading patterns. Hugs to ya both and y'all are in my thoughts & prayers, as are your families. Bob

Thanks John!!

We are doign OK. Just very tired :-)

We are glad to hear that things are getting back to normal for you and mom!!! We hope to see you very soon.

I will trty the tablets in the DW. As you know, our water is scalding hot so maybe we'll try a chlorine based detergent. Thanks for the tip. We'll report back when we try it.

I believe this version has a small power shower spinning fr

Could you be thinking about the Mobile Maid? Our Mobile Maid has the Power Shower in the lid. It's a small twirling arm. It even says on the arm and front of Dw "Power Shower" The Frigidaire has nothing on the top. The only water comes out of the spinning tube.

I have tried angling the glasses at different degrees with no real difference. I'm going to try not letting the glasses touch each other. This should cause the water to circulate better. I will post some pictures of the load that we just did. Perhaps you can see where we could improve the performance.

We'll report back :-)

<Hugs to ya both and y'all are in my thoughts & prayers, as are your families> THANK YOU!!

Also...thank you for the info :-)

Better results!!

I spaced the glasses and cups that are in the top rack plus I tried Sun Light power packs with great results!! 1 or 2 spot on one glass and the rest were perfect!!!! Thanks for the suggestion John :-)
