Dosing ball

Although I didn’t get any of the new P&G liquid (courtesy of my wife! :)) I did have a quick feel of the dosing ball, yes, definitely thinner.

Picked one up

I bought an Ariel liquid and am using it on a few loads right now.

I can confirm it is definitely more concentrated and is now in line with Persil S+M.

The dosing ball is definitely thinner and physically smaller than the previous one. It's a little less `solid' so is quieter in use but not (as predicted by all of us) as quiet as the Persil ball.

It's quite sudsy but perhaps I am being a little heavy handed / careless with dosing. The ball seems a little harder to dose with than the Persil one. Surely not a ploy by P+G to make us use more??

My local Tesco also had the new Purclean one. It smelled quite pleasant - just a little lighter than the regular one. I managed to resist purchasing it on this occasion.

Rolls, my machine leaves liquid residue in the drawer too so I worry it will also be clogging the filler pipe (drawer to drum) over time. Mind, mine also leaves powder in the drawer :-/ I'm not too sure at all about my new machine but am persevering diligently.

Liamy, squeezing dosing balls takes detergent aisle perusal to a whole new level LOL

Would they ever do such a thing? ;-D

Haha I know, most people would be content with looking/sniffing, I’m stood there blooming squeezing things. I also do it on the rare occasions I buy the unstoppables too (just in case you don’t know you squeeze the bottle to smell the scent when choosing), so even though I know exactly what they all smell like I’m stood there squeezing and sniffing like.... well let’s just say that has garnered a few strange looks from people in the past.

Also as per Rolls said, easy to see why people go to the discounters to get detergents when you see some of the prices they charge. There’s a big stall (a walk in one) on my local market that is devoted to cleaning and personal care products and it’s brilliant, not only is it cheaper, he gets stuff from all around the world as well as the U.K. This weeks purchase was Australian OMO sensitive laundry pods, £2 for a box of 20.

He also currently has the European Omo/Skip “Active Clean” liquid detergent, which smells ace, £7 for a big 100 wash bottle. Didn’t get that as I have had it before and it is just to big to store as I keep all detergents in the same cupboard and if any don’t fit (as the Omo didn’t as bottle too tall) it annoys me that all of my statsh is in the cupboard except one product that I have to leave out.

I no longer have a separate laundry room, so have to be really strict with statsh size (could be sick with what I have gifted away/got rid off due to space), still doesn’t seem to stop me buying though, soon as I see a new product, I fall hook, line, and sinker.

Hi Liamy - don't worry - if I see you on Crimewatch one day I will call them up and explain everything :-)

I like the sound of your market stall - I would be a sucker for that. I've got a bunch of French detergents but have never even looked at OMO twice; assuming it simply to be a direct clone of Persil. Will have to pick one up when I go to France in May for my annual jolly.

Rolls - long long story but due to how the utility room evolved I ended up with another boring old front loader. It's an AEG prosense. I got it for a good price and also matching dryer. One of my `things' is fifty degrees; I have to have it, and not many machines seem to offer it anymore. It's not a patch on the Siemens build quality though. The drum seems dead thin and the rollover on small loads is abysmal. Must be poor paddles I guess. So I don't think we will last that long. The dryer is exactly as I expected - overcomplicated and makes the washing smell funny (condenser sensor). Should have got a basic one with a dial, start button and elephant trunk out the back!

@nickuk:

Laundry room: I see - things never seem to work out smoothly do they? Lol

I agree about the 50 deg C temp, it is handy to have, and my current Panasonic machine offers that too.

Thin drum: yes, it'll be a Zanussi in disguise. I wasn't impressed with the thinness of the metal in my Zanussi IZ. It's successor, a Chinese Panasonic, had a fairly solid drum... I was rather surprised. My current Panasonic has a thin drum again.

Odour from dryer: maybe it's not the dryer at fault, but a possible reaction between washing machine rubber and certain detergents. If I use Ariel liquid or Daz 'Whites & Colours' powder, the laundry takes on a sour smell, a sort of pungent, overripe rubbery smell. And it gets concentrated by the condenser dryer. It's really not nice at all. For months I was thinking it was the fabric conditioners at fault! It wasn't as though the machine was getting solely used with liquid; it was getting a hot whites wash alternately.

I do not get the horrible smell if I use a powder which has an oxygen bleach built in, such as Daz 'Ultra Whites', Lidl's Formil or Aldi's Almat.

Washing and rinsing an article by hand in Ariel liquid, then spinning in the machine, again no smell. So I came to the conclusion that certain detergents were reacting to the rubber components (hoses, seals) in the machine.
