I've had this little Junior for seven or eight years now. It's actually the first one I purchased, but not long after it arrived I got a great deal on another one in fantastic condition, so this poor little guy got pushed aside and forgotten about. But now that the sand blaster booth is usable it was finally time to give this one some much needed attention. As you can see in the first photo the paint on the body was pretty well trashed by years of use, but once I opened it up and removed all of the old dried out and gummed up lube it was clear that in all other respects it was in excellent shape. In other words, it was a great candidate for restoration.

In photo two, most of the paint has been removed. Some of the paint in crevices and inside corners was kind of stubborn, but I managed to get it all off. In photo three you see it as it looks now. Two coats of Royal Blue spray paint, two hours baking in the oven at 250 degrees, thirty seconds under cold tap water, and it was ready to reassemble with fresh lube. With any luck it'll last another fifty years, but that won't be up to me. It'll be in a box under the Christmas tree with my sisters name on it.

What a beautiful job, and you're absolutely right -- that is the last hand held mixer your sister will ever not buy!

I received a hand held "Dormey" mixer of similar vintage for Xmas a couple of years ago complete in original box.  It's a real pleasure to use.

Thanks Ralph!

And as for your comment,"that is the last hand held mixer your sister will ever not buy!," isn't that the truth! The white Junior in the last picture is the one that bumped this blue one into the garage for so many years. Once I replaced its cord and re-lubed it it worked like a champ, so I've been using it(with pleasure I might add) ever since. It's particularly good at mashed potatoes, which my sister has commented on several times. She has a hand held KitchenAid, and unlike their full size stand mixers the darn thing seems flimsy and underpowered. I think she'll get a kick out of this one.

David:

Absolutely stunning work - you're making me want a blasting setup! I hope your sister appreciates what you've done for her.

BTW, the decal for those mixers is available as a repro - just go to eBay and search on "mixmaster decal." Sunbeam has been generous in granting permission to reproduce its vintage decals. Here's a link to one for the Mixmaster, Jr.:

Jason and Sandy - Thanks for the kind words, and yes, I think she'll appreciate this. Most of her other small appliances are this color so this'll fit right in.

I've been thinking about those decals for this project for a while now, actually since tennblondie78 used one on her project back in June. I'm still thinking about it, but the blue is so dark that I wonder how well the black lettering would stand out. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to slip one on there to see how it looks.
