Hi guys. Not posted for a while but thought I would share with the group my new dryer I picked up yesterday. I was getting tired of the new dryers and them breaking after a few years so along with my trusty white knight I now have a reversematic hotpoint which is great. Doesn't take long to dry a load. It works great and it only cost me a tenner. Had a little drive to get it but was so worth it. It's even got all the plastic trim on the edges that are super fragile. It's got the usual breaks on the handle but so far I'm loving it

It even came with the original venting kit as well so both dryers are now vented out of the back of the summer house.

We has a Creda version of one of these many years ago.
A very, very basic dryer but it did the job.

Mum has had that dryer since new, and whilst not in great regular use is still working well, I can't even think if I've put a new belt on it. I have to acknowledge the design and performance of washers has developed since the days this dryer was manufactured, the build quality of many dryers these days is dreadful, I'm thinking especially of the last 15 years or so of hotpoint indesit and creda dryers, fire risk aside, the bearings haven't a chance with the tension the elasticated belts are under, the flimsy heater boxes are a joke and the cabinets so thin that the self tapping screws barely hold once you do come to reassemble the panels after a repair. One friend of ours who has several up to date washers and loves the technology, still stands by his 80's hoover electron dryers, I tend to agree. And coupled with the spin performance of the current machines, the load isn't drying for that long anyway.

I agree great to see the Made in Great Britain.

You have to also remember the prices charged for those machines was similar to what a modern upper middle end machine would cost today. We tend to forget that there was serious inflation in £ since the 1970s and 80s. If you put the price of one of those machines into an index linked inflation calculator, you’ll find they come out at about £600 in today’s terms.

We expect to be able to buy a clothes dryer or any other large piece of durable white goods for stupidly low prices. You aren’t going to get quality. It’s impossible.

Really, looking at 1970s automatics like Hoover for example, you’re comparing really to the few very high quality brands like Miele today in terms of the quality of build and components.

I actually don’t mind spending a lot on a piece of durable household tech like a Miele washing machine or dryer as I know it will still be working in a couple of decades time.

Before any Americans chime in, Miele repairs seem to be insanely expensive in the USA compared to Europe as the brand is so niche there.

The low end dryers on sale in this market and in the UK are utter rubbish though. You can add a fancy looking control panel and some sensors very cheaply these days but the underlying mechanisms of the dryer in many cases are just cheap junk.

Those old Hotpoint era dryers were solid.

It's not about who made them either. The old Ariston and Indesit machines or that era were very solidly built. We had an Ariston dishwasher from 1988 that was still running without any repairs in 2014.

Indesit tried to chase the budget end of the market and basically started producing bad quality machines that looked nice under all their venerable old brands.

It's a shame, but that's where the market for these things has gone. People are being unrealistic about what you can build at those low prices and what should be durable goods area nearly disposable commodities, which is an absolute disaster from an environmental point of view. Heavy appliances shouldn't be ending up in recycling centres after a couple of years use but that's what's happening!

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I was sitting here and thinking I need an excuse to have 2 dryers then I realised. No I don't. It's aw.org lol. If anything I need more. I may have the matching washer to go with it. Don't wanna jinx myself but if I so it will be plumbed in the summer house as I have my daily driver and so far I'm happy with it. The dryer has done 7 loads quick and no problems. One very happy chappy ☺
