Hello All:

I picked up the "new" Amana Radarange RR-4D this week, and found - to my chagrin - that it has a problem.

The white plastic inner part of the door, which is composed of two pieces bonded together, has separated. I did not think it had, but sadly, it is separated.

The good news is, the separation is clean, along the original joint, not a break. Which means a good adhesive should restore it to full function and appearance.

The bad news is, the plastic appears to be one of the polyolefins, notoriously difficult to glue. Not even the superglues touted for plastics usually work well on this family of plastics.

Does anyone have any idea what to use? Again, I already know that superglues Will. Not. Work., so I'm looking for something else that will. Amana glued it with something - something that worked for several decades - so it should be possible to re-bond it if only the right adhesive can be found.

Thanks in advance....

not sure this is the right answer,, but

I have had several of these where the plastic eventually separated - just kept using them - so far so good

Jon:

Gorilla Glue works on many plastics, but not the polyolefins. Polyolefin plastics are the "waxy" ones like polyethylene (polythene to our overseas members). Polypropylene is another. That "waxy" quality keeps glues from binding with the plastic.

I do thank you for your input.

The search continues.

I saw Cory cadman, the owner of the Radarange site, only this Friday - he's a friend and local here. He's looking into it, but doesn't know off the top of his head either.

New info...

Sandy, the consensus seems to be Loctite 3032 if you really want it done right. This begs the additional question, is the remainder of the loose piece at risk of separating later on and can it all be removed without damage and glued all at once? Else I suppose you could fix-as-fail.

This Loctite isn't easy to find (and it's pricey), but if you search ebay, you'll find a seller with it for $16.89 and free shipping (item 321332494170). -C

Hi Cory....

As you know, an otherwise good RR-4D is certainly worth $17 in repairs, so I definitely appreciate the info.

I have that other RR-4D we've talked about that I think belongs in your parts stash; you would be welcome to it. Can we tawk?
