New to me additional 51 Kenmore Dryer

Well, with this old stuff as you know one is constantly looking for spare parts to keep them going, so I was happy to finally find one at an estate sale. I hauled it out of the basement and got it home. It actually looked terrible there but wasn't in too bad of shape, the fellow was a bachelor and I can tell it was a low use machine. Still hooked up and running. Here it is with the back off to see what I have.

The roof on the estate sale house had gone and all the plaster had fallen off. Water was streaming in, it was the nastiest estate sale I have ever been to and of course had all sorts of treasures in it. It is hard to believe the guy lived in there, it had been bad for years and lots of stuff was ruined -- this was all the way in the basement but still had stuff piled on it so it got wet. That is serious rust there.

Fortunately I happened to have a powder coated spare that I had made for one of mine just laying around. Not too many folks have one of those. I have never installed it since the other spare one I ended up with was in such good shape.

Didn't know I would be doing this yesterday.

Anyway I was thinking I might just part this one out but it is in such good shape I guess I will go through the bother of storing it. Even the knobs are in good shape so it is a low use machine.

I actually have a real oddball 1950 dryer that is totally different than this on the inside -- that when it breaks probably won't be fixable. They must have changed the design after it, all the others I have come across match his one and the other I have. So I might be putting this into service if I want to keep the 2nd matched set.

No, like I said it was in the laundry room, next to a GE washer that wasn't so old, and it worked. There is a place where you are supposed to periodically lubricate it so I loaded that reservoir up.

Does this one have a lint filter?  I noticed in the first shot that what appears to be the exhaust port runs straight from the drum to the exterior of the cabinet.  Did this design not collect lint?

Amazing that you had the exact top for it. Does this one have a fan in front of the heater box in addition to the exhaust fan or just the fan at the top to pull the air out?

Lawrence, you could buy a box to mount on the back with a lint screen in it, but otherwise, the lint just went out the vent

Wow, what a great find Brian!  I don't think this version of the Kenmore dryer had a lint trap - I've got a train wreck of a '51 sitting in the garage awaiting restoration and it doesn't have one from what I could see.  

 

Say, do you happen to have a wiring diagram for yours?  If so can I beg you to send me a picture?  The wiring in mine is in really bad shape and shows signs of bojackery...

Hi Eddy it is great to hear from you yes we are all doing fine here

I just let these flock the back yard though it seems that one of mine did come with a lint filter contraption that just bolted on the back, it didn't seem like it would vent out anywhere after that so I didn't think it practical. I did keep it though, I guess for historical reasons.

Paul, I don't have a wiring diagram for this, well, there is a partial wiring diagram on the back of one of mine I can make a facsimile of and would be happy to send to you. Brian

Oh yes, there is the second fan on this, I just had to rebuild mine from some spare parts.

Looking at the parts list, that is part #17407, Lint screen housing, and s-5274 Lint screen Assembly that I have.
