Okay, I've got the dryers narrowed down in my other post.

Now I think my friend may need a washer as well.

I was going to give her my spare Amana Commercial Quality washer (1990 vintage) because I thought the thumping/jumping in the spin cycle was an easy fix; broken suspension spring. However, I checked today and they are all intact. Oh, it also eats belts for lunch..

Any suggestions for used non-HE top load washers? I know Maytag's Dependable Care reputation, but how about some others to look for, reliability and ease of service are a priority.

Used?

My 1st choice for a used washer these days is a Whirlpool-built Direct Drive washer. They're a dime a dozen, reliable, easy to fix, and cheap. As an added bonus, they were often paired with the good Whirlpool-built 29" dryers with the lint screen on the top.

How does one identify a Whirlpool built DD?

Any particular years of manufacture or models to look for?

WP direct drive machines

kenmore brand started with fall of 1986 full force.  They had some earlier models too.  WP also about the same time.

Amana Belt Eaters

I believe the series of machines that tended to consume the belt were the models where the motor was mounted to the base plate and held stationary. When a load would get slightly off balance, the pulley on the transmission would naturally pivot with the tub causing abnormal wear on the belt.

The current series of SQ machines, the motor is mounted to the tub supports which keeps it always in line with the pulley on the transmission. This extends the life of the belt.

So, an older machine that frequently spun enough out of balance to not trip the sensor would tend to consume the belt. However, if properly loaded and water level matched to load size, this spinning behavior is minimized.

Direct drive washer

i would suggest to buy a vintage washer as well as they are good and last longer i will post to pic so you can compare the direct drive washer and vintage washer in 2 post this is how a direct drive machine looks only trouble with the direct drive washer is they last 10 years max and newer models have the atc system so water is not as hot as they use to be
