New York State Bans Phosphates In DW Detergents & Lawn Care

Something just didn't smell right about how even store brand dishwasher detergents went no phosphate. Well a quick Google search gave me my answer.

New York State has joined the luancy sweeping the nation, and not only has banned phosphates in automatic dishwasher detergents, but lawn care products as well.

Ban applies to domestic and commercial suppliers.

Will be placing a huge order for STPP from either the Chemistry Store or "Soapworks" (whatever that other place a member posted as a good and cheap alternative source), before the week is out.

Will also start nabbing Electrasol "Powerball" tabs as well.

This now makes everything quite clear as to why that mysterious case of Cascade "Complete" showed up last week at a local supermarket. It was obviously stock sitting left over from somewhere,and once the abovementioned ban goes into effect, stores had 60 days to sell off old stock.

There is another alternative. Although I'm not sure which would end up being cheaper..........You can either

A) Buy phosphate free dishwasher detergent AND STPP

B) Buy P&G Professional line Cascade (which is the Cascade phosphate powder) online. I don't think the ban on phosphates included businesses such as restaurants etc. It's usually sold by food service or institutional websites online in cases. Here is one example

I wonder what they can substitute for phosphorus in lawn fertilizer? I'm guessing there isn't a good substitute, otherwise they'd already have done it.

Regarding professional dishwasher detergent, I know that both Cascade and Colgate-Palmolive still make versions with phosphates. I remember reading somewhere commercial detergents were exempted from the ban on phosphates.

My only concern is that both detergents have chlorine bleach, which I gather is necessary for both the shorter cycles used in commercial dishwashers, plus maybe to meet sanitation requirements in restaurants.

While homemaker-grade dishwasher detergent always used to have chlorine bleach, I prefer the newer versions that switched to enzymes.

So, for the moment, I'll continue to hoard my vintage Cascade, when I can find it. Then, when that has run out, I'll switch to adding STPP to the new stuff.

It does have bleach. It's the same smell I remember growing up in the 70/s 80/s when the dishwasher was running. That faint bleach smell (to me anyway)....strong to some. This box I have of the professional Cascade is three years old and it did a Great job without the enzymes. So if anyone wants to try it, it does work well. The only thing I was NOT SURE about it if someone ends up ordering a case of that from a food service site, only to end up getting the regular no phosphate cascade.

Unless One Is Reading Incorrectly

Ban applies to domestic and commercial dishwasher detergents. Only difference is the later have until 2013 to comply.

For those living across the river, shouldn't get to comfortable. New Jersey is seriously considering such a ban as well.

You can go to GFS- Gordon Food Service and but a 5 lb. box of PHOSPHATED-7.0% Institutional Cascade for 6.99, contains chlorine and no enzymes.

Am thinking is not going to be a long term solution in my case. I mean if NYS has banned phosphates in dishwasher detergent, even if P&G decided to bring back the original formulas, they cannot be sold here.

Which is quite unusual for me! *LOL*

On the one hand have always felt P&G products cost too much for what one gets, and always waited until they were on sale or had a coupon. Indeed cannot recall a single product from this company, and this includes Tide, Cascade and Downy that one has paid full price for in ages.

Hoarding would involve paying full price when one just knows sooner or later Cascade products will be on sale at one local shop or another. Maybe sooner than one thinks, if articles in today's media are any indication (P&G had a very bad sales quarter and is cutting prices to maintain market share).

Methinks since one already keeps STPP on hand, perhaps better to simply add what the new stuff hasn't got, then add yet more products to an already huge stash of cleaning/laundry products.

Other problem is that between our DW being only a small 18" model, and even then we rarely run it but once every two or three days,it takes a long time to use a container of dishwasher detergent. Am just getting below 1/2 bottle of the last Cascade Complete with "Hydroclean" bleaching action, purchased almost two months ago.

LOL we may have to secede from New York State (Putnam and Rockland counties and down), create a new state called New Amsterdam...... and run it the right way... with Phosphates!
And let the rest of the state STARVE without our (downstate)tax dollars!

This "green" business is a royal PITA when taken too far too fast.

Lawn care? Does this mean that (dried) cow manure (loaded with phosphates) can't be used?

If I remember correctly, I think the 8 lbs I bought (comes in 2 4 lb containers) ended up being like 33 dollars with shipping (give or take)

I bought 50lb stpp and 8lb of oxygen bleach and it was $39 to ship. It is still cheaper than The Chemistry Store(shipping). Now I will see if it's any good. I'm not above hording!! It keeps my dishes from having a horrible smell that lingers.

I had a great deal on Electrasol four years ago. I had at least 200 boxes of the stuff and I am still using it still(50 now). I will probably cry the first time I use the new stuff from the store. 4/$1 I can't complain about the stuff.
