Hey Greg~
Good to see you posting again. I recently bought a Frigidaire for my rental unit. It was $450.00 at Appliance Direct.It is a really nice looking fridge. My tenant told me it seems to get her food much colder than the unit it replaced. The only thing I need to do is install an icemaker. Other than that, I think it is much better than the Whirlpool it replaced--compressor went after just 4 yrs!!

In the house..
I have a Kenmore Elite double door fridge,Stainless Steel with water and ice on the door. It was bought last year at Sears. Great Fridge also...Plenty of storage room inside. It will set you back about $2300, but well worth the cost. You may also get lucky and find it at Sears Outlet.

I bought a KitchenAid Superba top mount refrigerator last October. So far, I have been very happy with it. I wanted a refrigerator with easy-to-clean glass shelves versus wire shelves and one WITHOUT an ice maker or water dispenser, which tend to make a refrigerator more repair prone. Surprisingly, that combination seems to be hard to find, but this one met my requirements, and it had the best frequency-of-repair record in Consumer Reports at the time. Whirlpool makes KitchenAid, so you could probably find a similar Whirlpool unit for less money, but you'll probably be stuck with an ice maker unless you go for a BOL model with wire shelves.
My advice—and this is solely my opinion—would be to get a good basic refrigerator without any extra contraptions. It will do its job and might last longer without need for repair than a loaded-up model.

Kitchen aid no longer makes top freezers...
My experiance is that Whirlpool/Kenmore and GE top freezers without slide out shelves are nice fridges..If you get the slide out shelf modell the shelvs will crumble to shreds..My kenmore in my old house (below) had those horrid shelves and sears gave me new shelvs.. which happend to be the deli drawer ones so i had 2 drawers in my fridge and loved that.. Right now i have an almost new late 70's GE Top Freezer i found at a thrift store for $50 (it still had packing stuff in it).. It works fine but i think a new fridge would be better as this one seems to not cool well at times.. I will keep it as a second fridge but will get a new one next go round thats either a whirlpool or a ge or 106. kenmore... My 2 cents

The other option like we have by fluke is a Danby "all fridge" with no freezer compartment whatsoever. Full size fridge top to bottom. I was a little leery at first but it gives you a lot more fridge space and I like it alot now. Of course this only works if like us you have a separate freezer, hopefully nearby. Ours is around the corner from the kitchen in the laundry room so it's readily accessible.

We bought a GE Side by Side with the "Turbo-Cool" feature. It has water, crushed, and cubed ice in the door. I like the glass no-spill shelves and the roomy shelves in the door (for milk, etc.). The water filter is easy to change, and is located in the refrigerator itself (right rear, upper shelf), rather than outside on the bottom of the unit.
My only complaint would be the size of the freezer. Our previous refrigerator was a top freezer model. In a SxS you can't fit a pizza box in there very well, but that's what chest freezers or upright freezers were made for. The narrow freezer on the SxS models will definitely hold your ice cream, frozen veggies, etc.
Our GE cost about $1700.00, which I thought was a reasonable price. We haven't had any problems with it, except for the occasional "ice blob" in the dispenser.

You're right, exploder. I just looked at the site, and KitchenAid no longer has top freezer models. What are they thinking? Guess they are trying to appeal to the HGN mentality. Hmpf!

LOL Retromom about the ice blobs. We have GE fridges at work, side by side ones with outside dispeners. They're nice, but every now and then you have to shove something up in there to dislodge an icejam.

I bought a Kenmore SxS, 25 cu ft., about 3 years ago. Very pleased with the refrigerator. Ice maker has broken twice and the fridge door handle just broke recently..easy fix though. Good controls, makes a good quantity of ice fairly quickly with the AccelerIce feature. The fridge is exceptionally quiet. Got it at the Sears Outlet store for $620. Easy to clean glass shelves, adjustable shelves. Keeps fresh food fresh for a long time, especially milk.

Your fridge looks wierd to me.. I don't like that lighting its to bright.. Then again i'd just assume have what petek said an all fridge and an all freezer.. Would work just fine too..

I didn't personally select my GE Arctica, but I can mostly echo Venus's comments. I don't use ice very much, so it gets blobby. The ice capacity seems a bit lax, but maybe that's just because whenever I do use ice, it's for a 3 qt ice tea maker, which kinda drains the supply. The SxS form-factor is surely wanting for freezer space, thus needing the KA in my garage. I had trouble with the dispenser oozing water down the door, NOT from the spout dripping but apparently from condensation getting inside the door an behind the decorative trim. May have been caused by a high humidity situation that took months to clear up ... but it hasn't been in a problem in a while. There IS some constant condensation collect in the drip try, but again it's not actual drippage from the spout. It seems to hold temps consistent. I used the defrost drawer feature once, worked well. Seems to be good on the energy efficiency front. Found out recently it has a DC-powered, variable speed compressor (if the tech stickers on back are correct).

Most all Kenmore Elite SxS's are made by Whirlpool.
However ... I can't say I'd *buy* another. I like gadgetry, but too much of it on a 'fridge makes me a tad nervous. And fridges are outrageously expensive.

That's true..It's a Whirly.
Chad..The light is only seen at night by the Ice/water dispenser.It is not nearly as bright as it looks.

What Glenn neglected to mention about his GE is that it is also the only stainless steel fridge known to man in everyday usage that is completely devoid of nasty smudges and fingerprints! 
So you guys all really get into the whole glass shelves thing? I find myself pining for the wire. After years of glass shelves my current has the wire, and they are the one and only thing about the unit that I will mourn when it dies.
