Thats the same fridge I had in my condo rental that just died after only 4 years. compressor went...No Thanks!
 
KA and Maytag

No big complaints on my KA stainless SxS so far and it's 3 years old now. I do find that some items at the very back of the fridge tend to freeze sometimes. I also get a big wad of ice in the ice maker bin once in a while if I don't use it regularly, but it's easy to lift out and removing a large quantity of ice makes room for new fresh crescents. Easy access to the ice/water filter in the front grille. The freezer has one shelf that will take pizza boxes if stood on end.

My sister has a Maytag "wide by side" model that's a couple of years old. I just saw it in operation for the first time last week when I was visiting her and I was impressed by how quiet it is when running. Apparently the "wide by side" feature allows for a pizza box to fit in the freezer laying flat. I think the "wide by side" models didn't go over very well and if you're interested, you'd probably have to find a used one. My sister particularly liked the way this model appears to only have one handle, since with the "wide by side" design, the fridge and freezer handles end up directly above and below each other. Almost a nod to the center dial era maybe. If you're looking for something a little different, this might be the one for you.

The Whirlpool I bought in 2000 looks like it has finally settled down as far the multitude of repairs go.

I actually have some good things to say about it.

It's Quiet.
The icemaker works fine, no blobby ice, no ice jams in the dispenser chute. We only need to make a bucket full of ice once a month, and at the end the ice is just as fresh as it was when first made.
It has a VERY bright light on the dispenser door.
I like the glass shelves. When clean, they really look sharp.
 
Unfortunately the wideXside will be going away soon. I liked the design, but the price was a little high. If you notice, WP is starting to push the bottom mounts. In the Maytag line, there is 1 18cuft & 1 22 cuft top mount. It's the same thing now with the Amana line. I guess the bottom mounts are much more profitable for WP.
 
Shane's Kenmore Elite looks very similar to my KitchenAid. Mine is four years old now and I haven't had a single issue with it. I would have loved to put a Sub-Zero in my house, but when I bought the house the builder had already installed the kitchen cabinets and tearing them out to accomodate a S-Z would have been too costly. Instead, I chose the cabinet-depth KA so it wouldn't stick out too far from the surrounding cabinetry. What I really like is that the refrigerator is shallower inside making it easier to reach items in the back. I've had very few lost and forgotten items since I've had this unit.

Prior to the KitchenAid I had a Whirlpool-built Kenmore SxS for four years and it never required a repair either.
 
David, you probably lucked out with the KA instead of the SZ. Over the years I've heard of nothing but problems with SZ's and when I used to house-sit for some friends they would leave me with the SZ repair guy's phone number just in case. They were on a first name basis with him.

Problems with SZ's

Ralph, you're probably right about my KA being a better choice than a SZ. IIRC, their frequency of repair (according to Consumer Reports) is something like 20% or 25%. Lynne Rosetto Kasper from Public Radio's "Splendid Table" once did an appliance report in which she mentioned that she'd always wanted a SZ, but when she asked her friends who owned them about their experiences they all told her they'd had multiple service issues.

I still like the idea of a built-in unit, so if/when I ever remodel I would seriously consider a KA built-in instead of the SZ.

Good to see you posting again. Don't be a stranger.-We also considered a SZ, but opted for the counterdepth Kenmore Elite. With all the other things we are doing around the house,refinishing wood floors and brick pavers in the driveway, the last thing I need is my kitchen torn apart.
Does your water/ice dispenser light up at night? Mine has a really cool blue light that comes on.

Hey yourself, Shane! :) My KA has a lighted ice and water dispenser, but it just operates on an on/off switch. Does yours have a sensor like a nightlight so it can turn on automatically? THAT would be cool.

thanks all for the comments and feedback, all very interesting. What about "SAMSUNG" ? I am not a fan of LG appliances, probably more fear from not many but a few horror stories posted out here. Well I just rebuilt my front porch so the "frig" will have to wait another year I think but I have been looking. I do want auto ice and water filter FOR SURE !!!! ...........
 
A friend of mine just bought a new whirlpool side by side and it looks exactly like mine that was made in '02 except the handles are a little different,when I first saw it the fridge handle was off,so I thought they took it off to get it inside,the handle was broken,they took 300.00 off for the broken handle,the salesperson said thats been a big problem with the handles because they are cheap,I looked at the label on the inside of the fridge and it's made in Mexico,so when I got home I checked mine and it just mentions USA and Canada and the handles on mine seem to be better made. No problems so far knock on wood. Mark
 
If ICE matters...

I have the 2005 version of the Kitchenaid side-by-side. Very similar to the Kenmore Elite mentioned previously. Ice maker works perfectly with no jams or blobs. Very happy. Lighted dispenser.
Personally, I avoid the foreign major-appliances. Very hard to find service. I still cannot understand why someone would buy Korean or Chinese when we have American workers punching out perfectly good GEs and Whirlpools.
Do American fridges keep your food fresh and cold? YES! Have American appliances served you well for 100 years? YES! Why buy foreign? I honestly don't get it. Foreign product service is dismal and you often pay more for the product anyway! These questions are rhetorical.
 
I have had several Whirlpool built refrigerators. And never had a problem. They are supposed to be the quietest.
I think my second choice would be frigidaire.
I would avoid GE refrigerator based on the noise factor.
