Funny, no mention was made of the prominently displayed box labeled "Modess". If memory serves me correct, that was a well known brand of tampons...

I'm also reminded of an episode of Malcolm in the Middle where Hal discovers a early 60's era bomb shelter in the back yard. It's done in bachelor luxury fashion, and Hal keeps it as his secret vintage man cave hideout until he gets bused... lol...
 
Looks like they did not do much to control the humidity; note the rusted can of coffee. Imagine the air quality for a family cooped up in there for any time at all; maybe that's why the food reserves did not include beans although I'll bet that protein powder was not digested without gas production. They did not show the sanitary facilities. That was not a salamander, but a lizard.

Does anyone remember that movie in 1983 called The Day After? There was a similar film set in England near that time. The fallacy about fallout shelters was that after the radiation cleared, survivors would emerge into an intact world. As the movies made clear, that was not the case and civilization was knocked back to very primitive times. Nuclear winter made growing food very difficult and insects ate most of the plant life. It was not something for which you wanted to survive the initial blasts.
 
Cool - literally a 'time capsule' indeed. With all that coffee, I guess they wanted the inhabitants to be alert and on edge...

Tom - that British 'post-nuclear' film you mentioned was possibly one I also recall called 'War Game'. It was even more graphic and stark than 'The Day After' - the feeling one had after seeing that movie was that it really would not have been better to survive a nuclear attack.
 
This is what we had on our land 1/2 mile from our house. The silo and center is still there with the barns. During Cuban crisis was like a hornets nest around our Site 11 at Willow, Oklahoma. Dad said with theses why have a bomb shelter as we were on the first hit list is war broke out. After one caught on fire in 1964 they decommissioned the sites and retired them for launch for NASA Mercury program.

We have one too...

in the rental house we own that our son now lives in... it's a concrete block tomb-like box including a block ceiling, built in one corner of the basement, but no furnishings at all were in there when we bought the house from the son of the original owner, an IBM engineer. It does have water piped in, but that's it. There's a date "1961" written in the mortar, same date as the one there...'61 was an interesting year, 6th grade and remember the duck & cover drills. We use it as a fire-proof storage area.

That powdered food in a can looks disgusting...
 
I live within a few miles of that shelter. Humidity generally isn't a problem here aside from people who over-water their lawns to the point of saturation. The little lizards like the mis-identified "salamander" are everywhere, I love them because they eat ants and are fun to watch.
