Don’t linger near appliances when they’re running. Even though the ELF levels are typically highest at the back of an appliance where the electrical cord plugs in, the magnetic field directly in front of a typical washing machine can reach 20 mG. You’ll be exposed to only normal background levels by moving a foot or two away.

I also got to see an operating 50 kilowatt AM transmitter and didn't really experience anything. I even got to stick around in one of the tuning shacks. Can't get any more exposed to RF than that!
I was told by the station engineer to take off anything metal, in case the RF arcs over. That certainly made me really careful...
I think that people who are "allergic" to RF radiation are nuts.
One ham I used to know told me a story where he met a guy who said he was "Allergic" to RF radiation and couldn't stand cellphones. (He was getting crabbed out after he finished a call on his cell phone.)
So, the ham says, "You do know that the maximum power output for a cell phone is only 2 watts, right?"
The guy nods... Then the ham says, "OK, hang on a sec..."
His truck had a mobile HF station in it with a 2000 watt linear amplifier and a heavy duty alternator to drive it... He keyed up his rig and put out a couple of CQ's... had a short QSO (Conversation) with someone and put the mic back down.
The ham smiles and says, "OK, that was 2000 watts... How do you feel? If 2 watts gives you an allergic reaction, then that should have killed you."

Exposure to AM RF-At one point I had to work on tower light flashers on an energized AM tower.I could feel the RF through my feet-and this was on a cold snowing day.This isn't recommended today-but 30 yrs later-still around.For FM-Were you near the stations antenna or a "leaky" RF transmission line joint?I have experienced RF warming of my hand by placing it near a leaky RF joint in the transmission line-and the antenna was defective-High VSWR.And-while working on the base of a tower that was part of an AM array-the tower had a FM antenna mounted on it-A component called an Isocoupler(RF transformer) coupled the FM transmitter signal(40Kw)across the tower base to the transmission line on the tower-the "hot" end of the isocoupler lighted my makeshift "trouble" light--a flourescent bulb Hung by the isocoupler for light-it lit from the FM RF.The neighborhood kids loved my feats of magic.and you could slide the flourescent bulb along the FM line-allows you to see the "hot" parts of the reflected RF.40Kw in-1500 W reflected-that antenna was replaced by the manufactuer-then less than 10W at 40Kw input-and transmitter tubes lasted longer.The antenna folks paid for our tubes burned out from their defective antenna.

sites that are 1 megawatt and 600Kw-this sort of power -yes you take off any metal objects-or you get a BAD RF burn or the RF if you get to close to the tower base-will arc to you.The short wave site I am at runs 100Kw,250Kw and very occasionally 500kw.I stay away from the hot spots and the antennas when they are energized-for routine operation we do not have to go into the tower feild.Its the hunters and others that may stray into it that can be a problem.Many years ago a hunter tried to use one of the support towers as a deer stand-he abandoned the idea quickly when he was informed the curtain antenna beside him was energized with 500Kw.SW curtain antenna arrays are made from lots of copper wire and supported by 4 towers up to 500Ft hight(low band) and 300ft square(high band)Low band frequencies of 6-11 mhZ,high band,12 Mhz-21 Mhz.Open wire transmission lines feed these arrays-and MANY warning signs posted not to contact them-or get near them-SW RF can arc to 6 ft or more.Birds don't read-and sometimes they get "zapped"causes a momentary VSWR OL trip on the transmitter.We are CAREFUL out at this site-In some of our transmitters-a 50Kw one is a DRIVER stage that drives the 250-500Kw stage!I really pay respect to the 15Kv DC voltages in our boxes and the 4160V 3phase power that feeds them!Your grounding stick is your BEST freind here!

Well then I guess my time must be nearly up with all the time I spent and spend doing the washing in the twin tub, I knew I really should have moved the loads around with a large broomstick handle.
I wonder what the hell my walkman has done to me after all these years and still continues to do,no more listening to music on the train coming to and from work then for me.
