Now that I have the GE range, an early 806 pair, and a KDS-55 KitchenAid dishwasher, there's only one vintage majors search remaining:

A fridge.

What I have in mind is an Amana like the Almond one shown below, but in White. This is the "Mary Tyler Moore" Amana, seen on the set of Mary Richards' second apartment - the high-rise one in Minneapolis's Cedar Square West. Mary's was Coppertone.

If anyone sees one of these in or pretty darn near Iowa, I'd love to hear about it. Units in California, Texas, upstate New York or Hawaii, etc., are just not going to be doable.

And now, here's the pic. How 1970s can you get?:

P.S.:

Since this is just the beginning of a search, and since I'm not as determined this time as I was on a range (other makes/models could be okay), I'd be interested to hear from anyone who knows about the reliability, repair-ability, quirks and issues of these Amana units.

OMG!

That's the fridge my parents had growing up.  That fridge lasted about 35yrs or so before giving up the ghost.  It was a real workhorse.  Ours had the door handles on the right side.

My folks bought an Amana regrig. that looked exactly like that, also in Almond, delivered new in January 1983. They must have made those handles for years!

I was just describing these to Kevin the other day as for some moronic reason more than a few times I got my fingers pinched between the two handles while closing one door and opening the other.

Ours lasted us from early 1983 until mid 1999 when my Mom bought a Kitchen Aide refrig and donated the Amana to charity. It might still be humming along for all I know.

Thanks, Guys, AND....

First of all, thanks to those who have confirmed that this is one of the more reliable fridges. That is something important to me, especially if I will be taking on a box that is 35 or so years old.

AND - As always happens in the search/research loop, something interesting has emerged from comparing photos. The fridge I posted has a full-width garnish molding extending all the way across the door from the handle, whereas the Lima fridge does not have this styling feature.

What this has me wondering is if this was a model-year difference, or a way to differentiate a higher-end model from a lower-end one?

We shall see....

P.S., Phil: How the hell do you find so much great stuff on Atlanta CL? When I lived there, it was a vast wasteland. Lucky you!

I misspoke - I meant a trim piece, but that wasn't what I said, was it?

I've edited the post to reflect that.

Do you have any idea what the trim piece meant? Model year or model series? It's not critical, of course, but I find these tidbits interesting.
 
...it's very much hit or miss here, Sandy...but unfortunately, misses are more true ...glad you found your stove and the frig is last thing - are you open to other Amana years or does it have to be that model(whatever it is)?

What I'm looking for is an Amana with the handle styling shown above. I just always liked it. Amana made it for quite a while, so there's a number of years to choose from, I think.

That's a Hotpoint that was loosely based on the architecture of the GE J757, which in turn was based on the Americana. The stamping of the cooktop is very different, and the light panel (below the control panel) has been eliminated in favor of a plain metal panel.

Even for free, it's not a really desirable range for me - no light, black glass on the oven door (HATE black glass), and less glamour than I'd like.

Would either of these be closer to what you were looking for? I don't see the chrome strip on the first three here, Sandy, but the 4th one LOOKS GOOD! (sorry, no interior shots) ...it's in the Rochester, MN area. Hope it's the right one.

I'm doing some followup on all three of the Midwest units.

The one on Gulfport CL is pretty far away, plus anything that age from that Gulf area of Mississippi can be considered to have rust issues, almost guaranteed, by this time.
