Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Great Info:

The pics on the Ft. Wayne CL ad are nice and clear, and I'm able to tell some things from them by blowing them up.

I can see an icemaker port cap on the rear wall of the freezer compartment, which might mean that a water valve is present.

I can also see that this fridge is not any different inside than other Amanas I've seen, but it DOES have that extra trim strip on the doors. I'm thinking that probably means the strip was a model-year styling feature, not a model series trim.

Hey, thanks!

Well....

A couple of things are notable here.

One, that's the third variation of the door-edge trim strip I've seen - I now have seen it in black, in woodgrain and now in chrome. Interesting.

Two, that's Dirty Diaper Gold, a.k.a. Harvest, not green (Avocado). All I will say about these two colors is that the '60s and '70s weren't all good.

dirty diaper gold...

that's rich! Actually I kind of like Harvest Gold, but absolutely despised my folks' complete Avocado GE kitchen, fridge, d/w, wall oven and cooktop, circa 1968, complete with matching Armstrong Avocado brick floor. Gaaak!

So would one be correct in assuming that Amana fridges were still built in Iowa at that time? Last that I knew the W/P bottom freezer models still were made there. BTW for those who haven't been, the Amana Colonies not too far W of Iowa City are well worth a visit.

Not Only....

....Were Amana products still built in Iowa then, they still had Barbara Hale as a celebrity spokesperson.

"Remember - if it doesn't say Amana, it's not a Radarange."

My neighbors the Wilson's had an Amana with that style handle and a burled woodgrain trim strip. It was purchased when they moved into the house in '86.

It was still working, but making a rattling noise when they got a new fridge last fall. It had a factory installed icemaker, I think.

Goatfarmer -exactly, $200 and a reason why you wouldn't buy it at that price.

Sandy - you sure have a way with words - dirty diaper gold. At least it wasn't dirty mustard yellow.

Mary's Fridge:

Just for grits 'n giggles, here's a shot of Mary's Coppertone Amana, from the episode where she moves into her new apartment. I never liked this set as well as the famous, first attic apartment, but director Jay Sandrich felt it was time for a change. One of the things I didn't care for was that the set was way darker than I feel a comedy set should be (a fault shared on Rhoda); this photo is tweaked considerably to bring up the brightness and contrast:

The Harvest Gold....

....Unit shown in Reply #20 appears to be the same vintage model Mary had - that embossed bright strip accenting the doors is the giveaway.

Mary moved into her new Cedar Square West apartment on "Mary Moves Out," the second episode of Season 6, original airdate September 20, 1975. This probably points to Mary's Amana being a 1975 (maybe an early '76) model.
