Hi all

I'm always fascinated by other cultures and languages. What have you got hiding in your World Music Collection?

I'm a big fan of Mylene Farmer, a french pop star somewhere between Madonna and Kate Bush. She is of course a gay icon and has been going since 1984.

Here is her most recent single Degeneration, which is more techno than usual.

 
Here is another one, which is almost like a full movie. If you are interested there are loads of stuff on youtube on her, including concerts.

She came in Second in Norwegian Pop Idol. Liked her ever since i heard some of her songs on a website.

Really like the song "Samantha" got it on Singstar haha. She sings in english normally so not sure if she counts. On a similar note i really like Cibo Matto!

if ABBA could sing in that charming foreign language which often almost sounded like English, sort of, and still be a 'foreign' group, I think this young lady counts, too.
Gosh, some things just never go out of fashion, do they?
Thanks for the tip, I've heard some great music this afternoon suggested by lots of folks here - and I bet I'd have missed most of it otherwise.

This is one of the campest acts around. Dalida was huge in the 70s and a real gay icon! She sadly committed suicide in the 80s. Here is her grave in Montmartre!

Hi Rob. Well I'm also a huge fan of Mylene. There are too many favourites to name, but Regrets, Desenchantee, and Californie probably for the memories they hold. Have you got `Les Mots', the double `Best of' CD from a few years ago? It is a FANTASTIC compilation. I sometimes put `nrj.fr (listen live)' on in class and we have heard the new single a few times.

I also love Francis Cabrel, from the South West of France which happens to be my favourite region. His music is like poetry and I used one of his songs while teaching Year 10 the other day (I'm a French teacher) which was observed by OFSTED!

And thirdly from France, Jean Jacques Goldman. Absolutely fantastic. I've got loads of French CDs but those are my three favourite artists.

I really like Greek music too, apologies if the spelling is wrong but Kaiti Garbi, Treandafilos, Anna Vissi, Antonis Varfis are my fave greek artists.

I have an african CD by Angelique Kidjo (Aye) which is superb.

And Pathera, I remember seeing `Etienne' when I was babysitting one night in the eighties watching MTV. I loved the song and the video was probably the most racy thing I'd seen! I grew up in a small village....

It's so nice to have a thread like this, Rob. **STARTS RANT Wouldn't it be nice if our radio stations would embrace foreign music? It would at least be a start if the commercial stations would play the great range of British songs we have rather than just playing the same 30 or so random records over and over. If I hear `Buffalo Soldier' by Bob Marley or `Shackles' by Mary Mary on Heart FM one more time....**ENDS RANT

Thanks for your comments! I have just about everything from old Mylene. I've like her since 1993 when she sang Que Mon Coeur Lache, at the music awards. I love her videos, which are like mini movies.

I also like Brigitte Fontaine (completely crazy), Stereo Total and Etienne Daho. I understand most of it but not fluent. Now just starting to learn German.

I agree with you! We are so narrow over here, I think the only French songs I remember here were Joe Le Taxi and Voyage, Voyage! It's definately worth spreading your horizons.

. . . with the voice of 1960s pop singer Pierret Beauchamp. Look her up on iTunes and read my review of her album "Tu te reconnaitras."

Since she's from Quebec, everything about her is in French so thanks to iTunes, she might attract a following of frustrated non-French-speaking fans.

Rob, I saw a new Mylene Farmer vid today on NRJ hits. It was much more old style (and she looked stunning in it) I think it was called `Appelle mon numero'.

Rob, I got the Bosch washer and dryer in the end. The basic Classixx washer with 1400 spin and matching dryer. I really like them, but has actually decided to order the Zannusi based on your fab `distribute rinse' video. Turns out everywhere was out of stock for a month when I needed them so just got the Bosch. It's a noisy beggar but I like the quick cycles and old skool no nonsense approach.
