Not another Kenmore!!

Can we stand another Kenmore thread? ;-)

I picked up this washer last night, a '67. Under the grunge, it's in pretty nice shape. I plugged it in and it will run, very loudly and it's hard starting, popped the power-strip breaker on regular speed. I didn't do any cleaning before a photo shoot as I'm going to tear it down anyway, give it an overhaul and do a head transplant with a much nicer panel from 65-66. I thought the KM fans might enjoy seeing it.

A few years older than my grandmother's avocado Kenmore 70, but otherwise quite similar. Nice!

A friend of mine mom had that same machine, but I never saw what type of agitator was inside.....

Yes, that is a good looking machine. It looks great in coppertone, too. Is the agitator black? Not sure from pic.

What a beauty of a Kenmore! Congrats! Reminds me a lot of the 1964 Lady Kenmore pair that my mother's original neighbors down the street had; purchased the following autumn after their summer of 1963 marriage. By the way, was the 1964 model year the first year that coppertone color was offered? I don't recall ever seeing it on earlier models.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear - a light over the dial! I didn't pay too much attention when I brought it home, I was looking more at the body than the face ;-) After you asked about the light, I remembered some friends had this same washer with a non-working light, I wondered at the time why they didn't replace that bulb - if it's there, it should work!

Of course I will save the head for you, Peter, but BYOLB.

I'm not sure when the Coppertone color came out on Kenmore, it's funny how the earlier brown colors (coppertone, coffee, etc.) were different from each other. This is probably obscured a little by the flash in the dark garage, but it does look more "milk chocolate" than other brand's, Maytag and GE were a little darker brown it seemed.

I have seen the poppy color on Gibson, we had a POD with it and I've seen it on kitchen appliances too.

Wow Greg, we had the 1968 Version of that very washer growing up. I can still remember going with my dad to Sears to pick it out one evening in Dec of '68, my mom stayed home with my little brother, can you imagine, sending your husband out to buy the washer your going to use for the next 10 years, oy!

Nine years ago when I first starting collecting, these machines were a dime a dozen, now they have been becoming rarer and rarer.

Lights should work!

It always drove me crazy too, to see an appliance with non-working lights. like its hard to replace a bulb!

When we move in to our house in St. Paul, there was the original '68 GE range with a full width console light. Of course, the previous owner couldn't possibly replace the bulb. When I installed the new lamp I was so delighted because the chrome hood covering the lamp had a bunch of small holes in it that the light shined through. I hate it that new stoves almost never have a panel light.

My parents had an old Whirlpool range. The bulb the indicated that the burner was on burnt out, so Dad got a replacement out of the basement. Problem was, he used a christmas lamp that would flash. So the indicater light would twinkle on and off. Too funny!

I bought a pair of 1-18's new, back in 1979--they were in Poppy. Sold them with the house when I moved---duh. My '68 Maytag 806 is in a beautiful Chocolate coppertone, hopefully that Kenmore will polish up just as pretty!

Cool machine I like the coppertone. Does the head that your going to put on the machine have oval shaped pieces of glass surrounding the water level and temprature gauges and an orange filter light at the right edge of the control panel? If so that is the same control panel that was on my moms 1963 70. I have seen a 1964 Sears magazine ad with my moms machine in coppertone and I have also seen it in an early 1965 catalog. Can't wait to see the after photos. PAT COFFEY

Hey Don I have seen your collection and I must say that it is pretty cool. I love the way you display your radio's above that beautiful Maytag washer and dryer you have I plan to get a disposable camera tomorrow or monday and take pictures of my Tv as well as my phone and radio collection. Oh and thanks for the welcome but I am not new here, I just let my membership lapse. I didn't realize that when Robert redid this website to make it the awesome way it is now (don't get me wrong I thought it was cool the other way too!!!)that he must have taken off peoples profiles who didn't page very frequently. Actually I was at the 2002 convention and if you look at some of the pictures taht were taken you will see me with my huge laundry bag stuffed with dirty clothes I brought to the convention to try out some of the vintage machines I am wearing a green shirt with white flowers and you can't miss me because I am a long way from being what you might call petite. Don I f you want to talk off the site feel free to email me and I would be glad to exchange phone numbers or what have you as I would love to talk to you PAT

Gansky1, looks like you have an interesting restoration project on your hands. I'd like to see the "after" photos posted here, including interior shots of the mechanism.

Appliguy, you have a collection of telephones too, eh? So do I, by virtue of 20+ years in the interconnect industry (and counting), including stuff from countries that don't exist any more. What sort of stuff do you have there? (Perhaps this belongs in new thread under Super?) BTW, Vienna VA is known as a suburb for people who work for a couple of "the agencies". You wouldn't happen to have an interest in old crypto machines by any chance, or aerial photography?
