Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Wow...those look even better up close, and the tub, agitator, and filter look MINT! What kind of work do they need? From here they look brand new!

Sad to break down your farm '57 LK that you painstakingly restored for parts, but the Pink Lady is definitely worth it, IMHO!

Oh my!

Something woke me up early this morning!! It must have been the appliance fairy! Those are the cream of the crop Robert! Now I see why you were making room for those beauties! I like the lint light! Does it work? Is the color of pink the same as Mayfair pink?
I must say as soon as I seen that pink peeking out of the packing I about had a heart attack! I was thinking if that stinker got my set of 56's I'm driving to MN and sitting on his door step until Neal says "Robert, would you just give the damn things to her, it's been a month and I'm tired of walking over her to get into the house"!LOL
What a wonderful find and congrads!

The Lady Kenmore....Pretty in Pink...!!!

WoW...Congratulations what a pretty in pink pair, and such fab condition...I bet I know where you slept last night...LOL

BUT...you cant mean to break up my first convention TL love!!!

"The Lady Kenmore" was the first US washer I fell in love, "Lights, Waterfall, RotoSwirl, Action"

Why was it called "Pregar" RotoSwirl????...was it from the "SplashMatic" book of marketing perhaps!!!

parts

You sure you want to break down the farm LK, after all that WORK?

So the high speed electric version was 8400 watts instead of 5600, what was the difference in BTU output of the gas versions? I imagine the gas versions were made longer because the gas line for a dryer would more than enough capacity for a high speed version, whereas the high speed electric version calls for a totally different outlet (electric range type outlet and cord) and heavier wiring.

Look at all the choices for water temps! Neat having MEDIUM and COOL in addition to the usual HOT/WARM/COLD choices

Westy:
The dryer needs to be taken apart and cleaned. The blower needs lubrication and the heaters need to be checked. I took the back panel off of the dryer and took out the blower, there was a birds nest in the blower housing, they must have come down thru the vent tube. I checked the heaters with a meter and they test fine, YAY, that is the crucial part. It would be hard to fine that 8400 watt element which is really a two elements on one buss a 5600 watt and a 2800 watt. It also needs a new lint filter as the felt on the old one is bad. The filter is still available from Sears parts. I should be drying by Saturday night!

As for the washer, when I turn the washer tub I hear a crunching sound which I suspect is simply rust off of the center post which will need to be painted sanded and painted with POR-15 paint. While the agitator shaft and spin tube and centerpost bearings probably still work fine, they will be “rickety” from age. As Whirlpool and Kenmore machines age they become louder with more banging and scraping noises from general wear. This machine is so pretty that it deserves brand new parts and to run like I just order it out of the ’57 Spring & Summer catalog whether it works or not.

Louis:
isn't it possible to put the pink cabinet on your restored machine
While that could be done, it would be a very difficult process. On Whirlpool and Kenmore belt drive washers the entire mechanism and wash tubs are suspended from a baseplate that is connected to the top corners of the cabinet. That would involved dropping and re-hanging the entire insides of the washer. It would be easier actually to just rebuild this machine.

Bethann:
oooOh good thing it was a Kenmore then! The lint-lite is fun, I don't know whether it works, but it will when I'm done with it. I will adjust it to lite when there is only a little bit of lint in the screen.

Mike:
Someone here years ago made up the “Pregnant Roto-Swirl” name because it’s so much fatter than the Super Roto-Swirl agitator of the 60’s and 70’s.

Kenmore1978:
The gas version has a 37,000BTU output. As for Keeping the White Lady Kenmore, NO. If I lived in a mansion I could keep both, but I don’t and I want to ensure that Mr. Pink runs for another 40 years. When you have as many washing machines as some of us do, you have to be sensible with what you can keep and what must go. The turquoise Kenmore set is heading to Louisville, KY to complete a 1964 Turquoise kitchen!

Later in the 60's, the Roto-Swirl agitator lost weight, got some slimming vertical ribs and was renamed Super Roto-Swirl. This earlier one we nicknamed "pregnant" because it is fatter. There is a comparison pic between them somewhere.

Robert, that set is sooooo sweet! But the important questions are: 1) will you keep this set together? and 2) who goes to storage/gets sold to make room?

Hi Peter,

Well this set of two will replace three machines in my collection. The turquoise '64 washer and dryer have been sold and are going to Louisville. My '57 will be broken down for parts and the rest disposed of so there will be room to have both the pink washer and dryer hooked up and running together!

Restored '57 LK

"The gas version has a 37,000BTU output."

So what was the "slow/normal" version's output?

As for Keeping the White Lady Kenmore, NO. If I lived in a mansion I could keep both, but I don’t and I want to ensure that Mr. Pink runs for another 40 years. When you have as many washing machines as some of us do, you have to be sensible with what you can keep and what must go.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you should KEEP the restored white LK, I know there is limited room. I just thought that after all that work, you would sell the white LK whole to some person who lusts after one, since the parts in it are not, for the most part, obsolete, so there would be no need to cannabalize it for the Pink Lady, just buy new parts to bring it up to snuff.

Good point Kenmore1978, I have all brand new transmission and spin tube parts to use in the new pink Lady. But what I really want to save is what’s long gone, all the electrical switches (water temps, suds saver, end of cycle and unbalanced bell, that's right I said BELL). But with that said belt-drive Whirlpool parts are now fast becoming NLA and now is the time to stock up on them because they will be like Unimatic parts soon, gone for ever!

Uni U C WE DO PAY ATTENTION

LOL. I had to go back for another longer glance at your photos today when I got home from work. I notice the LK washer has the basket with "the four rows of holes" at the bottom. I believe you once told us that basket style is also very rare. They ARE a Beautiful pair.Have a nice weekend. alr2903.

SEARS CATALOG PICTURE

I found this on the back page of my SEARS catalog from SPRING AND SUMMER 1957 They were also available in Sage Green, Sunshine Yellow and White.

Now Robert, I hope you wear that smart looking beige suit & heels, as well as that marvelous hat, when you wash your first loads in this pair. You have the figure for it. I mean, the smart dressed woman of 1957!!!

*LOL*

Only way that model and anyone else for that matter got into those "dress maker" suits was via a good Playtex rubber girdle and "waspie" waist cincher.

Back on topic:

What a great find! Such a beautiful color of pink! Why oh why won't appliance makers go back to colors? Am so tired of stainless steel and or white. Don't wish my kitchen/laundry room to look like a hospital or morgue.
