I haven't put a whole keyboard through the dishwasher, but I do remove electronic parts of my IBM Model M keyboards and wash the keys, and case in the dishwasher twice a year. I put the key tops in a mesh bag on the top rack. I also wash my plastic vacuum attachments in the dishwasher.

When I had a desktop, I just put a sheet of plastic food wrap over the keyboard and taped it to the back. Kept things nice and clean and no worry about spills.

A guy I know who has prostate problems who puts the hospital-type urinal bottles he uses during the night in his dishwasher. I don't eat anything at his house, EVER!!!

My late partner had a habit of chucking things into the dishwasher that I didn't want run with my dishes, and we went several rounds before the matter got settled. Dishes only. Period.

One of my high school teachers told us that he wore only knit neckties because he said he could wash them in the dishwasher. I haven't tried that one.

dishwasher uses

There is a recipe for dishwasher salmon which "cooks" on the top rack (wrapped in foil) during an entire cycle including heated dry. If you google it you will find it on a number of sites.

When I was 28, (1977) we had a snow day at school before Christmas and so we had a Christmas party at my house on that Friday night. There were a lot of us young teachers so we hung out together. We all had way too much to drink and someone thought it would be fun to throw my clothes in the dishwasher along with plates that hadn't been washed yet. I had a small, apt. sized harvest gold Kenmore dishwasher. My underwear was in there and ended up with spaghetti stains all over them. The comment was made that the machine cleans well but not so good on spin. Oh my "The Young and the Foolish. When I retired from school 2 years ago, that story was told to over 100 people in attendance.

toothbrushes

I put toothbrushes,light fixtures,and small trashcans(the last one by themselves, so no freaking out, and I use trash bags). I have an energy star dishwasher so I put LCB in the "rinse only" cycle. After that I run the normal cycle.

I do the glass shades from my ceiling fixtures also. I have a couple that are quite old, and difficult to replace. By machine washing them I don't have to worry about them slipping out of slippery hands.

Toothbrushes

I put mine through at least once a week. One winter I had Strep constantly. The doctor told me I was probably giving it back to myself through my toothbrush. Now I change the cup daily, and rotate the toothbrushes. They don't last as long, and the Oral-B's will give you the blue replace me sign quicker, but they are cleaner.

light fixtures

Polkanut, that has happened to me. I was washing light fixtures by hand one time and broke one. They always go in the dishwasher now. There is something about those things that are extremely slick. That wouldn't be a bad idea to but a dishwasher in a greenhouse for flower pots(I have put those in a dishwasher also).

- the front grill/control assemblies of window a/c units
- vegetable bins from fridge

basically, anything that will fit inside!
I don't always use a full cycle, sometimes just a rinse or two does the trick depending on what I'm cleaning

Broadcast transmitter parts such as smaller tubes,vacuum capacitors,etc.Just be sure the parts are WELL rinsed with clear water and alcohol to prevent tarnishing from detergent residue.Cleans those items right up-gets off the caked dust and fried bugs.Also audio system patchbays -again be sure they are rinsed well!

That was a great link.... thanks for posting it. I love the idea of washing potatoes in the top rack... I HATE washing potatoes! Also looked at the microwave section.... rising bread in 15 minutes... THAT I've got to try!

Well, I guess all I've cleaned in my dishwasher was already said!

So far I did clean:

my Folletto (Kobold) vacuum cleaner attachments
all the glass light fixtures
the oven trays and grills
the hob grills and burners
potatoes (rinse only, to get rid of the dirt).

After the "disgusting" activities like fixtures and vacuum cleaner attachments I run a rinse as the machine does a sterilizing rinse if I choose so.

Potatos and any other large quantities of fruits or vegetables which have to be really well cleaned get a few pre-wash rinses.

Works great.

Why not? The dishwasher is meant for silverware and glasses you put in your mouth, it can't be unhygienic.

Has anyone used their Maytag washer as a salad spinner? Slow spin, of course! I also wash my washer lint filter in the DW, after rinsing it it the sink.

When I lived in a warehouse apartment downtown, I used to put the filter from my electrostatic air cleaner (attached to furnace) in the dishwasher.

My Apple Extended II goes through a cycle on the top rack about once a year. I take out the 3 screws in the bottom, seperate the top and bottom shell, and put it all in the machine. Usually do it in wintertime so I can put the keyboard on a towel on the radiator for a few days to dry it out. Been through at least 5 times with no ill effects, in service since 1990.
