I know that this is not the place to post a vacuum post but i am not a member of vacuum land. Anyhow, i am in need of a new vacuum, i am wanting something that is new but has an oldschool design, like the old Eureka Dial-A-Nap, sadly these wonderful machines are no longer being made, however there is a similar machine on the Eureka website model number 1934A, i will post a link, i am wanting something that grooms the carpet. Then there is the choice of the Sanitaire model SC888, both models have the old Eureka design, what is y'alls advice for me. Oh and i want a vacuum that is going to last me a long time too..

Thanks Lee.. I know this does not belong in AW, but i don't have a membership on vacuumland. So please don't delete it thanks..

I'd reccommend...

If looking at Eurekas and Sanitaires...

Go with the blue Professional line. They're not quite as expensive as the red Commercial line, but they carry a better warranty , longer cord, and have more power than the regular 1934.

The model S670 would be my personal preference...
but the model S647 would also be a good choice.

I really love the simplicity of these models - and their ability to CLEAN! They are great carpet cleaning vacuums... if you don't need anything with tools.
Just keep up with the belts and use high filtration bags!

Sanitaire is excellent, easily one of the best vacs I've used in years. They were sold over here under the Electrolux brand for a very brief period, before disappearing again almost overnight, so I was lucky to get hold of one while I still had the chance.

It does clean very well, with plenty of airflow and aggressive agitation. I run a domestic cleaning business, and the Sanitaire is my vacuum of choice for matted-down traffic lanes and homes with a lot of pet hair. Takes up everything in one pass, and the grooming ability is excellent. Proceed with caution on poorly fitted or worn carpets though, as it will try to eat them!

My only dislike is the F&G bag system. The paper "neck" on the disposable bag seems to wear out quickly, developing pinholes and splits that leak dust into the outer bag. The new ST style bag looks like it would solve this issue, but unfortunately is not available in the UK. Once I've used up my current supply of F&G bags, I will probably just order the necessary parts from the States and convert it to use a shakeout bag instead.

How

about this one in the link? The last time I was in a Sams Club, they offered a 'traditional' Eureka Commercial upright for about $139. Very similar to the one shown in the link.

A friend of mine

in Fort Collins uses the red Electrolux commercial uprights in her home cleaning business. She says they breakdown constantly, but the parts and service are inexpensive and fast. They clean well and there just isn't anything decent on the market, anyway - so 'repairability' is her criterion.
I thought we were only supposed to avoid getting involved in the politics/personalities of the other club on this site, not ever discuss interesting things about vacuums?
Personally, I'd go with a properly restored classic vacuum. Cleaning up after the recent flooding here, the classic Hoover 2-Speed Convertibles and ancient Tri-Stars have rendered yeomanry service...the Oreck Professional choked and died on the dust after one room.

I think I would go with the Royal Metal commercial uprights. The fancase can be opened quickly and easily on these for fan replacement or inspection. The metal fans and fancases in the Royals are more rugged than the plastic fans and plastic fancases on the Sanitaire machines.I think Sanitaire should make a METAL body machine with a metal fan.Another is the Koblentz metal uprights-be sure to select the ones with the metal fans.the work just like the Sanitaires. They can also use the same belts and F&G bags.I don't like the plastic fans-they just break and erode to easily and quickly.

I appreciate all the advice

But i plan on using this vacuum for the home, i always liked the design of the old Eureka Dial-A-Nap, I love the way they groom the carpet. My Kirby Legend II was stolen from my home and there fore i need a new vacuum. The old Eureka design are harder and harder to find used nowadays.

I have 14 different vacuums in my posession but the one I use most,I bought at the Salvation Army for $12.It's a Kenmore Progressive with HEPA filter. The only problem it had was the original owner put the power cord that is on the hose for the beater bar attachment on backwords shorting it out and causing the beater bar not to work at all.I went to a local Sears Service Center and bought the replacement part for $19.95+tax.It is one of the best vacuum cleaners I own.I do prefer the cannister models with a beater bar attachment like this Kenmore(which I think is made by Pannasonic)but some of the ones I've restored are uprights and one of them has a hose with attachments.

Ok i have made my decision

I am going to buy the Sanitaire SC888, (link will follow) that has the paper bag, and a headlight, that resembles the old-school Eurekas from the 80's, which i might add were awesome machines and are becoming harder and harder to find, even on flebay.

Kirby Legend II

speed_queen75, sorry about your Kirby being stolen. I have a Legend II that I bought for $99.00 completely reconditioned, and it's been the best vac I have ever owned next to my Electrolux. I saw a Heritage II at local Goodwill for $25.00, but I didn't have my wallet with me, and when I went back later it was gone.
