This is a handsome fridge, but I can't make out the emblem.  It also appears to have brightwork at the bottom that may read "Automatic Defrost."  How would that work?  Like the Westinghouse system?

It's in beautiful shape for the price.  Probably had an easy life in a Lake Tahoe area cabin.

OMFG! I take it all back!

Seriously though, would a MW fridge from this period be a Westinghouse, a Frigidaire, or an old Norge of the SNL skit genre?

The epitome of early 20th Century luxury.

When you look at a beautiful old tank like this it makes me think of how these models were most probably the first electric refrigerators that their owners ever had, and what a joy they must have been to them.

I reflect on the hours of work, that my Father described to me in great detail, required by his parents' ice box in their NYC apartment in the Thirties and Forties (and they were lucky to have one) just to keep a fraction of what that MW could keep cold with some cheap electricity and a relatively small amount of elbow grease to defrost the ice chest once a month.

Sometimes it's good to count your blessings.

When Visiting A Friend Who Lives on Sutton Place

Here in Manhattan got the fifty-cent tour of his pre-war apartment.

In the corner of kitchen on an outer facing wall (opens to the courtyard/back of building), there was a small square door near the floor. Make some crack about Alice in Wonderland and was informed it opened to a small "ice box". That is during colder times of the year you put things into the thing and the outdoor temps would keep them "cool".

Now even back in the day Sutton Place wasn't exactly low rent digs (the film "Sorry Wrong Number" was supposed to be set in the area), so wonder why those with funds didn't spring for an ice box. *LOL*
