Hi,

I have an O'Keefe & Merritt range which I need to rebuild the valves on - what are the opinions on doing this myself or "sending them out" to be/get done? I'm in Chicago so it's not like sending them across town to do and I've noticed some people here have opinions and options for this, so I thought I'd throw it out there...

Here's the range (sorry, my kitchen is tight, I can't back up or get further away);

And the valves;

(Ignore the rice bag please)

I'm reasonably handy (I got the valves off and have really cleaned up the range).

Nice stove. By all means do it yourself. I'm not familiar with that specific type of burner valve, but it might be similar to mine. Basically a machined inner shaft/valve body in an outer case. Tension held by a spring. If like mine, clean it thoroughly to get the old grease and any grit off, then regrease with valve cream - a tiny bit smaller than a match head will do the trick.

Do one at a time so you don't get the parts mixed up and so you can refer to an assembled valve if you forget which way something goes.

Contact Jack Santorum at the old appliance club. He sells a little tub of the valve cream - enough for dozens of stoves - and will send directions to rebuild the type of valve that you have.

That sounds very cool, but my kitchen is more 60's than 50's.

58limited - just getting around to contacting them, so many little crises....
