Old AC - Repair or Replace?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Last June my 25k btu went out; was working fine that monring; I came home I noticed it was off. Never really found out what the problem was; I suspect it was a 10 dollar part. It would make a humming sound for a few seconds then click and be dead again. It was only 9 years old and I felt like I had made every effort to take proper care of it. I called 3 different repair places; they all said no they didn't service window units. My last call to repair place #4 said:"it will take 2 techs to pull your unit, by the time you pay for 2 techs and the part you'll have spent as much or almost as much as the cost of a new unit, plus you'll have some type of warrenty". He continued with "your better off to put the damn thing in a dumpster and go buy a new one". Well after that and about 3 weeks of no AC I did go to Lowe's and purchase a new unit. Now that alls said and done; it was a right decision. I run the new unit on low and have it set at 70 degrees; it keeps my house very comfortable and I can hardly hear it when it's cooling. The money I have saved on my electric bills has paid for the new unit almost 2 times over. I love all my household appliances but my 9 year old Frigidare went to AC heaven.

Stick A Fork In It, It's Done

Well spoke with a well regarded Friedrich repairman and he said based upon the problem described it's probably the condenser. Repair including parts and labour will run $600-$700, so that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Thankfully the weather has turned quite chilly and hardly likely to hit very high temps anytime soon again as we are near October. This gives one the entire winter and part of spring to find a new unit. Sooner or later these things pop up on CL or elsewhere so will keep my eyes peeled.

Thanks for all your support guys!
