I'm thinking about buying a local Kenmore dishwasher and using it as my daily driver while I repair my wonderful Maytag DWU 9600. Anybody know anything about this particular model?

That's a keeper.  I doubt it's any louder than the Maytag.  Supposed to clean the rust off a trailer hitch using Pots & Pans.  It's also probably right under the Lady Kenmore.  It's the 2nd generation of UltraWash Kenmore PowerClean-based dishwashers.  Coupld ber late 1980s early 1990s at the newest.  The original UltraWashes came out Christmas of 1984???

I guess that's a yes.

Wow! Now that's what I call an endorsement! Thank you all for the responses. Can clean the rust off of a trailer hitch, huh? Looks like this machine has a spray arm under the top rack as well as some kind of gizmo to spritz water over the top. Well, given that I'm possessed  with the spirit of Kenmores past, I guess I'll go for it. I think LeFevre told me about this a couple of years ago and I've been on the lookout for one. I don't mind dishwasher washing/rinsing noise as much as I mind the SNAP! drain solenoid and then the gurgle, gurgle, gurgle of water going into the sink elbow. And I pray it isn't as noisy as the noisiest dishwasher I've ever experienced, a GE 1973 "Potscrubber" (what a lie). When I put the dishwasher in years ago, I asked the plumber who was a nice guy but prolly never won any science fair prizes to drain the dishwasher into a dedicated DW elbow that was in the basement, right underneath where the dishwasher was installed, because I tend to run the machine at night and the draining noises are the only things I can hear from the bedroom. Well, after agreeing to installing it that way, I came home and found that he had gone ahead and fitted the kitchen sink with a new drain elbow for the dishwasher. WTF! and after I expressed my disappointment to him more politely than I wanted, he said, "Oh I had to do it that way cause that's code"

I'd like to have cocktails with the "code" people someday so I can bitch-slap a couple of them.

I guess that means no vintage GE or KitchenAids for you.  More left over for others lol.  I could have said cleaned the chrome off a trailer hitch lol.  Yes, the Kenmore has 3-level wash action.  (The WPs didn't even have that back then).  There is a spray arm under the top rack.  Make sure you do not block the "nozzle" in the bottom rack because that shoots water up to feed the upper spray arm.  also make sure you do not block the water stream that shoots out of the nozzle that's in the middle of the top rack--that shoots the water to the "gizmo" at the top--it's a "deflector".  also, the top rack MAY bew height adjustable.  I can vaguely see what might be the adjuster knobs, but not 100% sure.  Whirlpools are very "sensitive' to less than 100% water fill/water pressure and will not perform properly if even slightly underfilled.  So the water valve could have some sediment at this age to prevent it from filling properly.

Ken, you will love it. I have a version of this and use it more than the KDS18 although the capacity is a litte less.

They used to test the WP machines on the Super Scour or pot smasher cycle with a Burger King Whopper placed in the lower rack at start up. By the end of the cycle, there was no trace of it. The Power Clean module ate it and did not even belch.

The interior of that machine looks identical to the Ultra Wash model my parents had from 1995 until 2010. Theirs had electronic controls. Was a bit noisy, but certainly got the job done and never needed a service call. The sole reason it was replaced was my mother was convinced by a friend that Bosch was "the way to go" and they had redone the kitchen and wanted stainless steel. The Bosch is super quiet and cleans good, but both my parents are still old school in that they pre-rinse in the sink before loading the DW. I was still in school and lived at home when the Kenmore was first installed and anytime I did "dish duty" there was no pre-rinsing involved. Scrape the big pieces into the garbage disposal, put the dishes in the DW, and run the normal wash or pots and pans cycle. Never once did a dish come out with food still on it. I wonder if the Bosch will do that! My current home as one of the "tall tub" ultra wash models(circa 2005) and it does pretty good, but I have to use pots and pans, whereas the older model would do most loads just fine on normal wash. And IIRC, unless your hot water temperature is way low and the unit has to heat the water, the normal wash cycle was only about 66 min, or at least thats what I remember the countdown timer saying whenever I started it.

KM Standard Tub Ultra-Wash DW

Ken As mentioned by others this is one of the best cleaning and most reliable [ slightly ] vintage DWs you will ever use. Unlike almost all other vintage DWs ever made except some D&M machines this KM DW gives you guaranteed wash and final rinse [ and if you like even first wash ] temperatures. This coupled with a very powerful pump and the best food grinder and ultra-fine particle separation ever used in a home DW.

Because of the guaranteed water heating you not only do not have to do ridiculous things like keeping your water heater temperature at 155 degrees, but you also need not worry about running multiple appliances bathing etc. and finding a less than perfect final result from the DW.

And they're only replacing it so they can get the "

Well, now if I could only get the GD seller to respond to my last email. He said it's still available but when I asked him if I could come and get it on Wednesday, dead air. I wish there was a Craigslist Secret Police force that could be counted on to go to peoples' houses and bitch-slap them for a half-hour for lack of proper Craigslist etiquette. Oy.

We have a slightly newer version of that machine, and it is the best dishwasher I have ever used. Yes, it will eat the rust and chrome off of a trailer hitch! It has eaten everything I have thrown at it... I threw in half a bowl of mashed potatoes once, and not a trace left. The most I have ever found was a single grain of rice on the back of a cup.
