Yeah, you lift up the outside of the main agitator stem and rotate it. I remember having trouble figuring that one out as a kid. We had a Sears appliance outlet on East 14th Street and I used to open the lid on this model and fiddle with the agitator to see how it worked. It's deceptive, it looks to any normal person that you would turn the inner "dial" but, in fact, the inner dial stays stationary while you lift the outer agitator "post" and rotate it to extend the "paddles" on the bottom.

how the vari-flex works

To adjust the Vari-Flex agitator, you lift the top of the agitator (there are finger slots underneath the rim) and position it to the setting you want. Doing this pulls in the vanes to give more gentle action. If you pull them in all the way, and use the delicate cycle, there is hardly any agitation at all.....

Variflex Agitator

We had a model similar when we moved into our house; sold it to my neighbor for $100.

The pushbuttons were multi-colored and she was harvest gold.

But. . .anyway.

The vari-flex agitator, when situated for a gentle wash using the gentle cycle was the kindest, friendliest, easiest delicate wash that I've ever witnessed.

The only thing I didn't like about the machine was that the waterfall filter only worked long enough to wash the soap detergent out.

Is there a way to rig this so that the waterfall option works continuously?

waterfall filter

That waterfall wasn't a filter. These machines had self-cleaning filters and the waterfall was just recirculated water that emptied the detergent dispenser.

Very nice machine! If you find the model plate, I'll be interested to hear what year it is. I don't know that I've ever seen this particular version of the control panel!

It looks like 1972-1973 to me.

That will look really nice when it is all cleaned up. Congratulations!

That's the dispenser lid I remember from my LK- that brushed pot-metal. Your dials are different, though- they look later than my machine.

Mine would wash anything, and perfectly. I even used to launder the bag from the lawnmower's grass-catcher before putting it away for the winter; made it last forever, since grass is acid and eats the fabric if you don't clean it.
