In case anyone missed it on my previous thread last night, I was finally able to get the model number of my washer--I know a few people had asked. It's an A112 machine. So, perhaps now someone can tell me approximately how old my machine is, or at least when that line began production.

The serial number, if you can get it, is coded for the year and month of factory production so is a more accurate age reference.  Maytag didn't change models every year so a given model may have been produced for several years.

The 12 series was produced from 1984 until 1990 (when the black panel LAT models were introduced). The 112 was the bottom of line model for the 12 series: single-speed, standard capacity, 3 temperatures only, and no delicate cycle. If the washer is older than 1988 or 89 (I forget which exact year), it would have the Pitman helical transmission. If it is newer, it will have the short-stroke orbital one. Looking at the serial number, you should be able to discern what month and year the machine was made.
