Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

I'm sorry i vanished for a while, 2010 was a rough year for me and I'm so glad its over!

While home on vacation for christmas, i found some old pics i wanted to share - to start with, here is a pic of me on my Grandmothers late 60's GE that gave me my passion/obsession with these machines...

Anyone else have pics like this? This could be a fun Thread!

Granpda and Me

My Grandfather was a Television and Radio Engineer. He taught me everything I know about how to fix things and I'm so grateful for him now as I'm a really good handy man. He's 85 now and still loves when I call him and tell him stories like when I changed out the transmission in my GE all by myself. He was always so encouraging of my interests - my whole family was actually, and I am so grateful to them for not making fun of me but only furthering my fascinations. The pics to follow will show this...

Adorable...

I think more of us can relate to this picture than you may know :)

There were several pictures that my family had of me in the washer, clothes baskets, etc. Wish I could find them.

Birthday Cake - Age 6

Like I said, My family was very encouraging of all my crazy interests and I do love them for that! My dad also made this cake! My only comment, at age 6, was - "but the lid doesn't look like that"...

Thanks Tim!

I'm sure lots of people have photos - I hope you can find yours one day - I was thrilled when I came across these and had to share them with the people who I knew would appreciate them the most...

What a great Dad and grandfather. How uplifting and joyous.

The pix are a real delight, Matt. The term, "sudscake" will never be the same for me--I'll always think of you in your cotton ball suds hat. AMAZING!!

Matt, Thanks for sharing. I noticed that your grandparents had a separate faucet for the portable dishwasher. I have one on my sink deck from Ohio Brass especially for the portable(s); there are only 4 upstairs I have the dishwasher adapter on my main kitchen sink faucet so I could run two portables at once, but running a dishwasher on a single handle faucet makes the guts wear out fast.

Supportive Family

I too was quite the obsessed with washers. My grandfather, who was my father-figure growing up, did nothing but encourage my interests. I was partial to GE/Hotpoint machines growing up as all of the coin-ops around used them and I had a Hotpoint around age 12 or so. I too had various washer party themes and my grandfather gave me a GE hat for my 10th birthday. My mother had none of it and thought I was slightly obsessed (in a bad way), which I was I suppose (in a good way though).

Those pics hit pretty close to home, I really enjoyed them. IF I ever end up with children, well, lets just say they'll now how to work on things.

Separte hot water faucet for Portable DW =?

I have seen many of these in Clients' Butler Pantries or extra one in Main sink area...I thought it was a super idea..am considering one for my own Kitchen, so I can use the '72 Lady Kenmore Port. or My 1967 ge Mobile Maid, along with my 1984 Ka Built in, NOW. Why does it make the guts wear out faster, on what the faucet, or the Machine? Why is this?

I was told--

that the separate faucet for a portable is because (plumber didn't go into detail) that a portable dishwasher using a faucet with a sprayer-rinser hose could cause the sprayer-rinser hose to burst. Since half of my dishwasher experience has been with portables, it sort of makes sense to me.

Anyway, wonderful pictures and memories! My Ma thought my interest in appliances was odd, but didn't discourage me. Had my Dad lived past my 5th birthday, things may have been slightly different, though I probably could have approached that through the "how things work/how to do my own repairs" tactic.

Matthew, thanks for starting this thread. A big Gesunt to you and your family for sharing the love. I have a similar picture of me on top of the V-12's (in black and white because I'm twice as old as you)that I hope to get from my Sister one day (she is the keeper of the family photo albums)that I will be sure to post.

cardboard replicas

that washer costume reminds me of the cardboard washer replicas
i used to make at around age 8-9;about a foot tall, they were
usually norges as those were a favorite at that time, but other
brands were also made. Most were empty under the lid,but a good
norge replica did include an agitator and pulleys and belts
drawn on the bottom LOL

What a great thread...thanks for sharing...we should all add our pics from our youth into this thread, for those who have them.....I need to dig thru Moms albums and find mine, I was a rascal back then....

Well,

I don't have any old pics of me and a washer. Mum would have been mortified if any of them cropped up.

I do however have a video of my growing up pics that Mum cobbled together for my birthday one year.

Have a looksie, i was an ugly baby lol...

My Mom had a separate hot water faucet installed right away in 1974 when she got her 1st dw. Her reasoning was that she didn't want the main faucet tied up if she needed to draw water for whatever reason.

Those are some great photos Matthew, thanks so much for sharing!

I hope this year will be SO much better for you then last year!

Happy New Year and all the best!

Kevin

Matt, you have shared that video with us before. I'll say it again, you were NOT an ugly baby. You have been cute, handsome, and adoreable all your life as far as I'm concerned. My favorite, again, were the two gangster (I call it Al Capone era) shots of you at the end. They made my heart skip a beat and take my breath away the first time you shared this with us and it did the exact same reaction with me again this time. Intense and awesome every shot your mum pulled together for that video.

Harold, using a portable dishwasher with a single lever faucet puts strain on the valve mechanism, no matter which brand of faucet. They begin to drip because they do not shut off completely. It has something to do with the valve being open, but the water flow being stopped by the dishwasher fill valve and that puts pressure on parts that should not normally have to deal with it or something. I just know that I replaced way too many parts in that Delta standard kitchen faucet in my first house and a couple of the cartridges in the Sears sink faucet in this house before getting the dedicated hot only faucet for the portable.

Here is the sink faucet catalog from Central Brass. You have to tab down to "Fittings" to find the dishwasher faucet which is #0282. I remember when large hardware stores stocked dishwasher faucets in their plumbing departments, but now we can at least find them online. This faucet is heavy brass with thick chrome plating. She's a beauty.

I too used to put a chair in front of my Nana's GE. I remember watching that machine agitate, and we had to close the lid so it would spin, beautiful pictures, thanks for the memories. She used "All Temperature Blue Cheer" in the king size box, and would use the filter pan as a dispenser.
