Old Pic - Where it all began...

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

I'm sorry i vanished for a while, 2010 was a rough year for me and I'm so glad its over!

While home on vacation for christmas, i found some old pics i wanted to share - to start with, here is a pic of me on my Grandmothers late 60's GE that gave me my passion/obsession with these machines...

The Moble Maid and Me

This was me at about 3 years old. I either didn't want to be bothered while I enjoyed my dishwasher cycles or didn't want to be yelled at for somehow crawling up there by myself...

Granpda and Me

My Grandfather was a Television and Radio Engineer. He taught me everything I know about how to fix things and I'm so grateful for him now as I'm a really good handy man. He's 85 now and still loves when I call him and tell him stories like when I changed out the transmission in my GE all by myself. He was always so encouraging of my interests - my whole family was actually, and I am so grateful to them for not making fun of me but only furthering my fascinations. The pics to follow will show this...

Halloween, age 5

My dad made this costume for me - my sister was my cohort in fighting the evil dirty laundry! She has an actual box of Oxydol (oh i miss that smell) and a Hard Hat!

I was outfitted with a shower cap covered in cotton balls for suds and GE's on my cheeks!

Birthday Cake - Age 6

Like I said, My family was very encouraging of all my crazy interests and I do love them for that! My dad also made this cake! My only comment, at age 6, was - "but the lid doesn't look like that"...

my first washer

this is a picture of me about 3 in 1976 near my mams first auto washer a hoover matchbox it was this machine i helped her fix and along with watching the hoover repair man i became hooked on mechanical things

Matt, Thanks for sharing. I noticed that your grandparents had a separate faucet for the portable dishwasher. I have one on my sink deck from Ohio Brass especially for the portable(s); there are only 4 upstairs I have the dishwasher adapter on my main kitchen sink faucet so I could run two portables at once, but running a dishwasher on a single handle faucet makes the guts wear out fast.

Supportive Family

I too was quite the obsessed with washers. My grandfather, who was my father-figure growing up, did nothing but encourage my interests. I was partial to GE/Hotpoint machines growing up as all of the coin-ops around used them and I had a Hotpoint around age 12 or so. I too had various washer party themes and my grandfather gave me a GE hat for my 10th birthday. My mother had none of it and thought I was slightly obsessed (in a bad way), which I was I suppose (in a good way though).

Those pics hit pretty close to home, I really enjoyed them. IF I ever end up with children, well, lets just say they'll now how to work on things.

Separte hot water faucet for Portable DW =?

I have seen many of these in Clients' Butler Pantries or extra one in Main sink area...I thought it was a super idea..am considering one for my own Kitchen, so I can use the '72 Lady Kenmore Port. or My 1967 ge Mobile Maid, along with my 1984 Ka Built in, NOW. Why does it make the guts wear out faster, on what the faucet, or the Machine? Why is this?

I was told--

that the separate faucet for a portable is because (plumber didn't go into detail) that a portable dishwasher using a faucet with a sprayer-rinser hose could cause the sprayer-rinser hose to burst. Since half of my dishwasher experience has been with portables, it sort of makes sense to me.

Anyway, wonderful pictures and memories! My Ma thought my interest in appliances was odd, but didn't discourage me. Had my Dad lived past my 5th birthday, things may have been slightly different, though I probably could have approached that through the "how things work/how to do my own repairs" tactic.

I have a similar picture of me on top of the V-12's (in black and white because I'm twice as old as you)that I hope to get from my Sister one day (she is the keeper of the family photo albums)that I will be sure to post.
